They'd have been perplexed by our 1925 Model T as well.
You have to remove the front passenger seat cushion, as the tank us under there. And there is no gas gauge. You insert a specially marked stick to see how many gallons of gas you have left (similar to a ruler or yardstick).

At a fair I went to last summer there was a car show and someone had a gorgeous and pristine blue and white Belair with a sign on it that said, "Get naked and you can touch it".
The guy who owned it was sitting less than 10 feet away. I don't think anyone took him up on his offer.........
