thunder/lightning storms...new dog terrified

Hi everyone...we just adopted a new dog about 10 days ago and we were told that she was alittle afraid of storms. Well last night we had a pretty nasty one and this is the first time we went through this with her. I do have a storm jacket for her...but it really didnt seem to do anything. My other two boys could care less, so this is the first time I have ever had to deal with this type of situation. She was trembling, and panting, and whinning the whole time. I tried not to make a big deal about the storm, but I felt I needed to comfort her. I even took her into our basement so she wouldnt hear the noise but that didnt seem to calm her. Any suggestions would be greatly appreicated!! Thank you
