Depending on WHERE you are, STATE TAXES on hotels can be higher than the "local rate".

Room refrigerators are usually complimentary.   Mini-bars are NOT.

Front desk agents are required to EXPLAIN all this information to you BEFORE they tell you how to open the room door.   Be sure to ASK if you have any questions.

Re: refrigerator in hotel

Some hotels have food for sale in their fridge.  Although I have never heard of the extra charge to open. They maybe bypassing the nightmare of sorting out the closing bill if you do go in and move things. Some of these r fridges have food and drinks for sale, each one is set in an exact spot in fridge. When it is moved, you are charged for that snack. A few years ago I was at St Francis in San Francisco and they did this. I guess when you move anything or add weight , or take out the computer immediately registers it in the billing dept.  when I went to pay bill, I had to wait for housekeeping staff to go to room and do a check in fridge before paying bill to see what was missing. I was ******, never again!  . We were not warned about this.and this was a long time ago.  But I am thinking maybe some hotels have gotten ahead of the game, and tell you so there will be no issue when checking out.  I certainly would not like that cause we always have snacks and left over meals. I stay at a very high end boutique hotel in Studio City when seeing granddaughter. They did away with snack thing years ago, too much trouble.  You can order bar drinks and stuff thru room service or upon demand. We don't drink, so we don't need this service

Mini bars have been around for more decades than I can think back.

Some
hotels will empty and remove the items inside if you request it because of the alcohol if there are children in the room, but not to utilize otherwise. I have never stayed at a hotel that did not have mini-fridges available. If they are not listed as an amenity then there is an additional fee to provide one.

We travel a lot, including many trips to Vegas and cruises. I've seen this open and pay on cruise ships but you can ask your room attendant to empty frig and then use it at will.  LV does the move it and pay frequently ( I know Caesars and other high  end places do this). Several years ago when Hard Rock was in LV and their frig had all sorts of things ( I took a pic and posted on FB) including drinks, condoms and sex toys ( I'm sure that was for their usual demographic NOT ME).  I've also seen this in nice resorts in Japan and several other countries.

@spumoni99, did you check for an email receipt with the breakdown of cost?

Since it was so recent, it may have been the pre-authorization holding fee that hasn't yet fallen off. It's not unusual for that to be at least $100 a room, more depending on some hotels.

@MamaWick      I think the OP is referring to "name brand" hotels...especially in big cities, resorts, and near sports or entertainment centers.

I worked for a "name brand" golf resort...and YES, it is expensive to stay there!    Golfing tee fees can be well over $100 for one round, especially "in season".

It's BEST to call reservations and get the prices BEFOREHAND to avoid "the shock"(!!!!)      di

@Franklinbell.  I wonder if unplugging it would de-activate the sensors?  Might be fun to try.

That strikes me as being creepy and ridiculous. Creepy because how is the fridge being monitored? Is there a camera in the room? Ridiculous because I deal with hotels across the country for my job and have never heard of this from any of the chains we use for our employees who travel.

@SaveTheTurtles     I think there is "some" confusion over the mini-bar and a SEPARATE room refrigerator.     The mini-bar has a GLASS door and a price list.      The refrigerator (sometimes you have to ASK for one)...is for your personal storage....medicines, baby food, etc.

OH! Ok that makes more sense. Thanks for that clarification. I was like, wait, what? 😂
