My mom was the same and gave so many lectures to us kids on frugalness she painted herself in a corner—would not spend $ even when it was the logical thing to do. I found her patching a turtleneck she purchased when she was age 44–she was 90 at the time. I had to quit taking her shopping with me. If I looked at something she deemed unnecessary, she would feign an anxiety attack so I would leave the store before purchasing. Once we got to the car she was always fine. My answer every time to the question if something was new was “no.” It saved a lot of unhappiness.

I posted here recently, my oldest daughter asked her Dad to give her a new Kohler toilet for her birthday. He did and he also put it in.
She still has it in the house. Often if we pay attention (not always) we can come up with something to give the person we want to give a gift.
I've given some weird gifts to friends throughout the year. In our family we've always called them "I love you" gifts.
I used to hear that from my Mom. Often our parents (myself included) just want to spend time with out children.
My favorite thing is to spend some time with my 3 (now adult) daughters just talking and hearing them talk about when they were kids (and especially things their Dad) did when they were young.

I sure couldn't live that way. LOL I was in Steinmart the other day and heard this woman tell her friend about a top she's worn for 10 yrs. I looked over at her and shivered. LOL

I'd keep doing what you're doing. He's very lucky to have you.

@SharkE You’d faint if you went through my closet. I have clothing that is more than 10 years old and I still wear it...shoes too.
Not out of style, very classic items and better made than today’s junk. I have new stuff too.

Whenever I think that he could use something, if I can afford it, I'll get it for him.
I'm happy to do that.
Recently, I got him a nice, warm blanket.
What did he do with it?
He used it as a couch cover.
*Sigh*
So, I bought him a couch cover.
Actually, he has a futon, but it functions as a couch.
Also, these apartments doesn't have a ceiling light in the living room, so I got him a torchier(sp) floor lamp.
When I gave it to him, he said, "I wish you wouldn't spend your money on me!".
Parents!
*LOL*
What are you going to do?
Lol @Plaid Pants2, I lost my Dad last year but when my 4 brothers and I were younger we would ask him what he wanted for Christmas and he always said " A big box of peace and quiet".
