Hey, when I first got here everybody was going through about five steps to get a client's phone number, though Legal Easy on the system, click on the which office/which city, the type of client, the client's name, personal info, etc.

One day I said, We need a Rolodex that I can keep the numbers is on my desk.

One of the bosses said, Hey I still have one and a bunch of blank cards from long ago.

He brought it in and Yes, now everybody asks me for a client's phone number and I have it instantly - even if the system is down. Cool

OMG, Minky, me too! Mine isn't the traditional rolling one, but it's a plastic box that's black on the bottom and clear on top. It even says Rolodex! There wasn't one here when I started this job, but I asked for one.

Most resumes are now read by machines, not people.

Even the pre-screening is done by outside companies.

I don't know how double spacing after periods will make you look "older." If that was a deal breaker, I wouldn't want to work for such a nit-picking person anyway!

You are the age you are. I think it's a better bet to find a company that values experience, rather than trying to become something you are not.

Absolutely. And, assuming they don't realize how old you are from the resume and they call you in for an interview, don't you think they'll notice it then?

Re: over 45???: important RESUME Tips from Business Insider

I hire people frequently, I have two interviews scheduled for this afternoon. Most of this is silly rubbish. I will not even look at a resume that doesn't have a home address because I'm only interested in local applicants. I've been burned by out of state applicants who can't come in for an interview or who travel for the interview, get the job and then tell you they can't start for a month or longer because they have close up their houses etc etc. I don't care or even know if the phone number is a landline or a cell phone. 99.9% of the time it's a cell phone today because that's how we live. However, a landline would not be a deal breaker. Everyone doubles spaces after periods. Otherwise, the document would be jumbled mess and unreadable. I can't believe that even made the list. Does Hotmail still exist? Not that it matters, the two resumes I have in front of me have Comcast internet. Both candidates are well under 30 judging from the dates they graduated college. I'm very interested in them...should I assume they are senior citizens because they have Comcast email accounts??? Really? The only one I agree with that makes any sense at all is #5. That's a big one! And there is so much more to it than out dated, ancient job skills. I have received resumes from middle aged people that list every single job they ever had in their lives. They aren't resumes, they are books! And I toss them in the "no" pile and move. If you are 50, I do not care about the jobs you had when you were 20 or even 30. I only want your resume for the last 10, maybe 15 years. Don't even sum up the decades before that. No one cares. It's irrelvant to today. Listing old, out dated, irrelevant job skills makes you look dim witted more than it makes you look old. And don't ever tell anyone what your typing speed is! It's irrelevant today. #5 is big, everything before that is just silliness.

Too long to read and no paragraphs!

However, putting your home address on the resume is not cool! Security is the issue. Why let the world know this. You can list the city but not your home address. I don't know what company U recruit for but.............................

How about I start mine out with "Woolworth's 5 & 10 in 1955 - part time after school?"

Heh. Cool

I used to like going to Woolworth's, JSS, even up until their last few years in business.

Reese, our Rolodex sounds much like yours. It is actually inside a case that has a lid that closes down over it. Dark brown bottom, tan top. It has two sections that "roll" side by side - one for current clients and other contacts, the other for closed files and extra blank cards.

Some old ideas are really good ideas. Smile

ITA, Mink.

But a mixture of both - older and newer/newest - is "just right". {#emotions_dlg.thumbup1}

I used to do keypunching one summer when I was a teen. The computer was a behemoth in an icy, air-conditioned room. It was bigger than many houses. It spit cards out 24/7.

Not on my resume! But I have fond memories. Nicest boss I ever had, and the job pd well.

Those things, plus good health benefits and a 401k, are priceless. 8)
