Most resumes are now read by machines, not people.

Even the pre-screening is done by outside companies.

I don't know how double spacing after periods will make you look "older." If that was a deal breaker, I wouldn't want to work for such a nit-picking person anyway!

You are the age you are. I think it's a better bet to find a company that values experience, rather than trying to become something you are not.

Yep...

And I agree about chronological age (not how youthful you may actually feel), but beggars can't be choosers/choosy. Especially when paying for the most basic of needs is on the line.

It's a shame sometimes, but more and more businesses now value relevant skills over experience. And if they can get both with an "older" employee, the better.

Though often they're dumb, and instead hire two young, inexperienced employees for the same salary they would pay just one 'complete package'.

AOL/Hotmail account makes me giggle. My sister practically and the last ""mindspring.com"" address on Earth...finally had to give it up w/ her new service. I told her you need to be @ least 50 to really understand what that is...and she got much younger w/ her new email address! Ha!

Awesome. 8)

While the issue of how many spaces after a period is probably going a bit too far (maybe), the other suggestions are right on the money.

It's been suggested for many years to never go back further than 5 or 10 years on your job resume. Your most recent certifications/education/work would be the most relevant, anyway. Anything you learned before then would be out-of-date with today's technology.

That's why many "experts" on resume writing say to stay away from the "dates of employment" types resume styles and go with the more modern styles that don't list chronological job dates but focus on relevant skills (leadership, technology experience, budget management, etc.).

No one who has been comfortable using technology even references their home addresses or home phone numbers anymore. And if you put "cell phone #" instead of "Mobile", that dates you as well.

Yep, I had to laugh at the AOL reference. Very true. {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

ITA.

Succinct, short (1 to 1.5 pages if possible), 'action-worded' (like acquired or generated), and showcasing diverse multi-applicable skills are also desirable.

There's nothing wrong with being, even looking, "older".

But job seekers and staff who are rarely wanting to learn, grow, remain relevant, and stay up-to-date is the issue for many employers.

And there's no need to be offended or huffy about it, as it's not pertinent to just you personally.

Our culture is youth-obsessed and superficial, like it or not, and that's just the way it is. If you can't be flexible, adapt, or take the attitude that you shouldn't have to, that's your problem.

Most other people realize that arrogance and self-importance impedes success.

I really do think that many employers prefer to hire younger, fresher staff because they are more gullible and will swallow the company line BS more so than older workers.

I truly believe this, being one who used to be one of the company flag bearers until I saw too much, learned too much, and experienced too much to ever be that naive again.

Good point; surely could be one of their reasons. Smiley Wink
