Yes, they are!
I've really noticed a change in the night time temps. A little higher elevation and less concrete to hold the heat.

Well, I just typed out a detailed response thanking each and every one of you who responded to my question, but must've hit cancel instead of submit, and poof! Aaaargh! I really did appreciate such invaluable info.
I was initially pretty clueless about AZ, and have enjoyed reading up on it, but hearing all of your personal stories was much, much better.
My family is living south of Phoenix in the Chandler and Gilbert area, and I suppose that's my dilemma. The White Mountains and Flagstaff area sound lovely, as does Tuscon! (I think especially Tuscon, as I'm a lover of 'old' and it's the oldest city in AZ.) Unfortunately, they're both too far away for me to actually be of much help to them as far as babysitting, etc. is concerned. Bummer!
IDK. Maybe I'm over-thinking this, but I suppose that I'm afraid to go against my nature. I'm a winter person, and love the snow and cold, but I WANT to give the move a chance, and go into this with the right attitude.
Thank you all so much!

6pm here in Vegas, 103 and sunny but, on my patio (western exposure), thermometer says 115.

Sabatini, is there any way that you can go visit during the hotter months? It's a radical change from what you are used to, weather wise. My brother and his family live just south of Phoenix too and when they talk about it being 90 degrees at 10 o'clock at night....... I live in an area that gets hot myself (103 today) but it cools off at night and in the early morning (72 at 7am). Yes, everything is air conditioned but you do have to go outside sometime.... There are also the monsoons and dust storms to consider. I'm not sure the dust storms follow a pattern but the monsoons do.
Good luck with your decision.

Because of a new job, some of my family members relocated there from the north a few years ago and love it in AZ so much that they decided to stay permanently, and recently bought a lovely home. They've been asking me to join them, but in all honesty, the thought of all that heat freaks me out, because I've always been a cold weather person. I've lived in various places across the US, but have always been on the coast.
Lately, I've been wavering...
Can you please tell me what you love about AZ?
Thanks a bunch!
Depends where your friends live. There is cold weather and snow in the north during winter - Flagstaff, Sedona, White Mountains. Phoenix and Tucson, very mild winters, though it does now in Tucson every few years.
Beautiful mountain ranges. From Tucson you can be in the pines at 9200+ ft. in 45 minutes. The Grand Canyon, Sedona, Tombstone, Biosphere, etc for the tourist attractions. The White Mountains, where you can live year round, for winter sports, skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, etc.
The University of Arizona and the Arizona Wildcats (basketball and football). Go Cats! A lot of good restaurants, good shopping, a fairly short drive to San Diego or Mexico for the beach, although I no longer travel to Mexico. Friendly people!
birdrops, Senior citizens have to be very careful which county they live in if they are planning to retire in AZ. I am in Pinal County in the San Tan Valley and Queen Creek area which is Pinal and there is absolutely no assistance for seniors. It is considered a rural area so there isn't even a Senior Citizen Center in the county. If a senior has to go to a doctor and has no one to drive them if needed, they are out of luck in this county so if they don't have a ride they are told to take a cab. Maricopa County is far better. I am so sorry I left So Cal after forty years, not my choice and I would give anything to be able to afford to go back. The cost of housing is the only thing stopping me from going back to CA.
Hi Lindsaysgrandma. I am familiar with Queen Creek. I have sons living in Chandler and Phoenix, who have friends living in Queen Creek. I guess it is actually pretty much a bedroom community for Phoenix, Mesa, Tempe, etc. It's too bad you are not in Maricopa or Pima County. Good luck to you!
Considering that, from what I have been told, there are 185,000 people living in the San Tan Valley, Queen Creek area you would think they would have more to offer. I was stunned when a doctor's employee told me to take a cab...can you imagine people on fixed incomes taking cabs, I mean really, that just doesn't fit the budget. Our lease is up in August and we don't plan to stay in Pinal County. My daughter made all the arrangements for the move from CA and because I was recovering from my third back surgery I was not in a position to get involved, too bad because I would have done a better job of homework. I'm looking forward to living in an area closer to stores, restaurants and medical care. Always nice to see here on the boards birddrops. Interesting nic you have, is there a story behind it?

On 6/8/2014 tansy said: Lindsay, you might check out the original Sun City in Surprise -- many rec centers, all with pools. In the same area there is Sun City West and Sun City Grand.
Hi Tansy, My daughter, granddaughter and I live together so Sun City wouldn't work. I am not looking for Senior Citizen Centers but because my daughter's time is limited and I'm not driving very much anymore, I need transportation to my doctors. Unfortunately there aren't many doctors close by and I have to drive quite a distance so it would be nice if there was transportation available as in other counties. We plan on moving to Maricopa County before the year ends so hopefully things will be better.
