edited to add I am in Arizona

No surprise here, Arizona was my first thought. Pretty sad when we have to turn on the AC in April.

I'd like to ask some of you Arizona folks a question, if you don't mind.

Because of a new job, some of my family members relocated there from the north a few years ago and love it in AZ so much that they decided to stay permanently, and recently bought a lovely home. They've been asking me to join them, but in all honesty, the thought of all that heat freaks me out, because I've always been a cold weather person. I've lived in various places across the US, but have always been on the coast.

Lately, I've been wavering...

Can you please tell me what you love about AZ?

Thanks a bunch!

Depends where your friends live. There is cold weather and snow in the north during winter - Flagstaff, Sedona, White Mountains. Phoenix and Tucson, very mild winters, though it does now in Tucson every few years.

Beautiful mountain ranges. From Tucson you can be in the pines at 9200+ ft. in 45 minutes. The Grand Canyon, Sedona, Tombstone, Biosphere, etc for the tourist attractions. The White Mountains, where you can live year round, for winter sports, skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, etc.

The University of Arizona and the Arizona Wildcats (basketball and football). Go Cats! A lot of good restaurants, good shopping, a fairly short drive to San Diego or Mexico for the beach, although I no longer travel to Mexico. Friendly people!

birdrops, Senior citizens have to be very careful which county they live in if they are planning to retire in AZ. I am in Pinal County in the San Tan Valley and Queen Creek area which is Pinal and there is absolutely no assistance for seniors. It is considered a rural area so there isn't even a Senior Citizen Center in the county. If a senior has to go to a doctor and has no one to drive them if needed, they are out of luck in this county so if they don't have a ride they are told to take a cab. Maricopa County is far better. I am so sorry I left So Cal after forty years, not my choice and I would give anything to be able to afford to go back. The cost of housing is the only thing stopping me from going back to CA.

I live in Pima County, on the NW side of Tucson & the proximity to amenities was one of my big considerations when I chose where I wanted to live. I retired from work in WA & moved down here about 8 years ago. I have pretty much everything I need from good shopping, medical, dental & hospitals within a 5 mile radius & I'm not so far out in the boonies that I can't call a taxi cab if I was ever unable to drive myself. As a single older female, that was important to me.

Re: it is soooooo HOT here!!!

Shesallthat, I sure wish it was going to be a high of 92 here in Las Vegas, NV today! Right now it's 91 & only 9:30 in the morning! Generally, it's hot here for June through Sept. Our winters really vary, but it does get very cold down into the upper 20's- mid 30's @ night during the winter and 45-50's in the daytime..... But it's NOT hot all the time as you indicated by watching that show Flipping Vegas- the couple just happened to be filming during the late spring/summer... I laugh when tourists come here in December wearing shorts & T shirts and asking why is it cold? Well, duh! Check the weather report before coming and that goes for any city we travel to Smiley Happy

Re: it is soooooo HOT here!!!

I moved from IL to Phoenix 40 years ago. I love the desert climate and even the heat. I always despised cold and snow even as a child. The desert has a stunning beauty unlike an other geographic area, but as others have said, you need only drive a couple of hours to reach mountains, pines and even alpine climates. You can drive about 4 hours from Phoenix to find beaches in S CAl or Mexico.

The Phoenix job market is improving by leaps and bounds. The insurance industry has a huge presence here. Many companies have large offices. The housing market has pretty much fully recovered from the crash.

I recently moved from Phx proper to a smaller, resort community about 9 miles east of Scottsdale. I have stunning mountain views and it's about 5 degrees cooler than Phx.

I love AZ.

I've been here longer than in my birth state and don't see myself leaving anytime soon. If money was no object, I'd live on a beach in California or Mexico, but that's likely not happening! {#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

Hi Lindsaysgrandma. I am familiar with Queen Creek. I have sons living in Chandler and Phoenix, who have friends living in Queen Creek. I guess it is actually pretty much a bedroom community for Phoenix, Mesa, Tempe, etc. It's too bad you are not in Maricopa or Pima County. Good luck to you!

75, slight breeze, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky with Lake Michigan perfect! No where on earth I'd rather live.

Yes, they are!

I've really noticed a change in the night time temps. A little higher elevation and less concrete to hold the heat.
