See your doctor, who will either take x-rays or send you to a specialist.  It could be bursitis or maybe you need to stretch out your IT band with a series of stretching exercises.  I had something similar, it was bursitis, and I eventually had to have a cortisone shot.  The shot, which was very painful, helped; but, I also found a really good massage therapist who worked on my IT band.  Made all the difference.

If you have had this pain for 2 weeks or more without improvement, being evaluated by an ortho is important. Hip pain can be so many things. You need to get the appropriate treatment so that a small problem doesn't turn into a bigger one. It may be nothing, only requiring stretching, heat or ice.... or it may require a specific program of physical therapy.

I had hip surgery and there are alternatives.  It could be Bursitis or an injection may give you relief .  I would first see my PCP and get an examination and if your dr. feels you need to see a specialist he/she will direct you.  Good luck.   Cat Very Happy

@dennylilly ... Best to go into the doctor and catch something early. Maybe just a little physical therapy will loosen things up.

Please see your doctor.  I am recovering from a hip labral repair and resurfacing of the ball and socket joint of my left hip.  My surgery was 3 months ago and the pain is gone.

There are so many things that can be done to help you.

Take care

One thing I found that helps is to stand on something solid, HOLD ON to something, but let the leg dangle.  Slowly move it around as much as is comfortable.  You can do both sides.

Sometimes I evidently sleep crooked and something "slips" and put enough pressure on a nerve to be painful.

This simple "stretching" will usually give me some relief.

The method I described may help.....until you can get to the Doctor!

Some of the MANY possible causes of hip pain would be - bursitis - pain usually located in outer aspect of hip - comes with use and subsides with rest or NSAID, or back problem pinching nerves - can be pain in sciatic area or outer aspect of hip , can stay in hip or travel down the leg or arthritis - pain is generally in groin area as that is where the actual joint is located.

Any of these conditions will not improve on it's own and must be evaluated by a doctor.Could need steroid injection or surgery or exerciseor antiinflammatory drug.

If it's a burning pain, it's a pinched nerve

I am currently experiencing what I think is hip pain.. I am not able to lift my right foot up to like cross over to put on a boot for instance or sit cross legged on the floor.  ONly the right leg though.  I feel like the pain in coming from my hip.  Not sure when it started because I didn't notice until I was putting on boots and before that I really didn't put my leg in that positon for any reason.  I sat on the floor to put gifts under the tree and that is when I realized I cannot sit indian style with that leg either.  Was just wondering if anyone else has had this experience.  I'm 57 and every ache and pain sends me into thinking the worst.  I am not suffering too much so don't want to go to the dr about it.  As long as I don't move that way there is no pain. But realistically I'm afraid what they might find so its helpful if I am reassured by other's experience.

Yes I'm a baby.  Thanks!

@dennylilly   I am 61 now.   I was in my late 50's ( your age)when I had both knees and both hips replaced over a three year period.  My hips started bothering me in my early 30's.  My knees in my 40's.   The symptoms you describe  of your hip discomfort could be the early signs of arthritis...  OR NOT.  I had a lot of groin pain. Trouble walking, bending and EXTREME PAIN.    I could not put socks on.

Some people have back pain....and assume it is their back, when in reality it is their hips!   I never could sit Indian style....still can not even with these bionic hips!  That  you can not sit that way with the one hip could just be a sign of your needing more stretching.....so not always a sign of hip arthritis.

Best thing to do I suggest is next time you have your  yearly physical,  mention the discomfort to your doctor and  ask  for a hip X-ray to see if there is arthritis in the joint. If there is no sight of arthritis then  physical therapy could be something to try.  I would not worry about having to have surgery at this point at all.  Many other avenues to investigate first....but that Xray woukd really be a good start.   Best wishes to you!
