I just renewed mine this year a few days ago for 8 years and I said YES of courses, I will be 68 when it is due again, if I am still alive.

Here in Michigan we've been able to renew on-line for many, many years now. I rarely need to go to the SOS to renew, unless they need an updated photo of me on my license.

I always joked if they tried to find me based on my driver's license, well....good luck. The picture is old. I've been able to renew mine for several years now on line.
I have been to the DMV a few times recently (I have a handicap tag and had to go in person).
There are so many things in this life that if people had to spend even an hour doing, well, I am pretty sure their eyes would open up. So many things people never have to (say rub elbows with others) that they'd think, "Wow!".
For instance, when was the last time some of you went into your bank, waited in line and conducted business? When was the last time you went to the Post Office and waited in line? And on and on.
I'm just saying things are so easy these days to do some of these things, most people don't think about who are the people behind these necessities and who are the people who actually go into these places.
I'm lucky, I haven't worked in 43 years so I have the time and ability to do some of these things. I understand that to some (not to go in person) is a necessity.
I have to wonder what would change in society (people's mindsets) if they were required to do some of these things maybe once or twice a year.
Add to that (different but similar) volunteer and work in child's classroom at least once or twice a year).
This has become a society where many don't even know the person living next door or down the street. I find that sad.

Wasn't my intention to feel "bigger". If I had I would had told her for sure it was spelled wrong. LOL

We had been able to renew online in Georgia but one time each person has to bring to the DMV 3 pieces of identification to show proof of residency. I took my passport, a utility bill and SS card.. for that I got a "star" on my new license and can renew online again.. Since I'm over 65 I had to do a quick eye test so it's all good.

Well, if the lines in my post office and bank are any indication, people do this every day. Motor Vehicle lines are the very worse here. When I need an eye exam for my license, I just go to the eye dr. Quicker and easier.

I wore bi-focal's and tri-focals for many years, but!! I never wore them when I took my driver's license eye test. Did not want that √ mark on my license. Passed every one of them, sans glasses, no problem.
Mental checks, really? What, they going to have a "head doctor" every site where I can renew my license? I have been seeing a Psychiatrist since the 1990's, and an initial test takes about 2 hours. And you really think someone mentally ill will be stopped by this method. HA(using 1 of your favorites).
When I went at age 72, several years ago, and that was before my cataract surgeries. Took the same old eye test. No glasses-no problem.

@hckynut - So you don't think it is a problem that elderly people with dementia can renew their licenses without anyone questioning them? Around here that happens.

YES, "mental checks" to insure alertness, memory and concentration ability. Not every neurological check is about mental illness (does that even need to be said?)
The rules/laws re drivers licenses are different in every state. In CA it's renewable online, by mail or in person every 5 years, but every 10-12 years you might need to go in to take an eye test or written test - I had to do that once just because I'd been renewing by mail for so long. After age 70 in CA, d/l must be renewed in person at the DMV. LOL at my next renewal I'll be 69, so wonder if I'll squeak through until I'm 74, heh.

In Ohio, we must renew in person.
As an aside, how petty for someone to correct the OP's spelling. I think we all knew what she meant.
