@Another new name Sue  That test is not recommended as 100% reliable to detect cancer.  There have been reports of false negatives but which turned out to be wrong and a colonoscopy did detect cancer. A home test kit is no substitute for actual medical treatment.

@Love my grandkids @That's what my doctor said . He doesn't trust the results .   My primary ordered it fir me nit my gastroenterologist.  I'm having the colonoscopy inJanuary not looking forward to the prep .  The cologuard was so easy and non invasive .

I too recently had this procedure, and didn't find the prep to be all that terrible.

One quart of liquid in the evening, and another quart in the a.m.

The nurse told me to set a timer on my phone for every 15 minutes, and to drink one cup of liquid in each 15 minute period.

In that way, the prep just took an hour, each time.

I just had one and used pills (Sutab) for the prep. 2 bottles of 12 pills. 12 pills in the afternoon before with plenty of water/ white grape/ white cranberry juice/chicken broth. 12 pills 5 hours before the procedure.

I've been doing it this way since age 42. Much easier than choking down that viscous salty drink and it works like a charm.

My first prep was using SUPREP and the second one was using CLENPIQ. The Suprep was bad enough, but the Clenpiq was totally disgusting. Both times I almost threw up, it was truly a miracle I didn't.

Thankfully my doctor now has me taking 4 Dulcolax tablets first and then mixing Miralax with Gatorade. It's so much better. Using this method is also so much cheaper compared to using the prescribed methods I previously used. The co-pay for the Suprep (back in 2015) was $50.

I also asked to be given something in case I got queasy again and I was prescribed Ondansetron (Zofran). My co-pay was under $2. I took only one pill and had no queasiness at all. I took the pill as a precaution, so I may not have even needed it, but I wasn't going to take any chances.

That's interesting about the Zofran. I have to have these tests every 3 years and I dread the prep. The last time I had this by the last 2 doses of the drink I was so nauseated that I had to talk myself out of throwing up. And sometime in the wee hours of the morning I did have dry heaves. Thankfully the prep drink had already done it's job and I was totally cleaned out by then. I will definitely ask for Zofran. My biggest fear is that I will throw up the prep and be sent home only to have to do this again.

Yes, there are alternatives. I told my dr that I couldn't keep the whole jug down and would throw up half of it. They gave me one that had 2 16oz drinks plus laxatives for 3 days. The dr told me after the colonoscopy that it was the cleanest my colon had ever been.

I put off having a colonoscopy because I'd always heard how horrid the prep is.

Finally couldn't put it off anymore.  Yes, the prep was awful.

But having a two-inch rectal tumor and a round of chemo infusions followed by weeks of chemoradiation is worse.

Do what you need to do to avoid the alternative.

Exactly what happened to me, thankfully without the radiation. I manage to get that prep done regarless of how unpleasant it is. Have to do it again in 2 weeks...

We can send men to the moon, spit atoms, grow life in a petrie dish. So what the heck is with the gawd awful prep and procedure for the colonoscopy?

I now use Cologuard.

You should discuss this with your doctor re the prep. I can not get the Go Lightly down either & I informed the doctor. He gave me a much easier prep. I could drink the prep with 7Up or Gingerale. It was much less liquid & tasteless with good results.

You can’t not prep as the doctor can not visualize the colon; the doctor will stop the procedure.

Cologuard is not an option for high risk persons
