I'm pretty sure she had 8 kids so she was doing hardly anything and making $80/day tax free. add to that she walked 2 people's dogs for them once a day while they were at work - $10 each for that too - ours was one of the dogs. She had a really good cottage industry going there - why get a job ? of course she hated when there was a 2 hour delay because she would have the kids for those 2 hours or if school was cancelled she did not watch them and would not get paid.
I don't understand the (seemingly sarcastic) comment, "Why get a job?" It sounds like she had three jobs.

ITA, she also had her own household to look after.

So what ? most American women work full time jobs and have children and take care of their household.

Carol and Julie Collins were the resident teenage babysitters on my block when my family moved there. They charged 75 cents an hour, and I undercut them at 50 cents an hour.

I was busy every Friday and Saturday night, very often days on weekends, sometimes whole weekends, and weeknights too.

I made lotsa money! I did dishes, gave baths, made meals, changed diapers, cleaned up.pee and vomit, refereed fights, burped babies, put band aids on boo boos, played games, and much more. Moms liked it because the house was always clean when they came home...dishes done, toys and clothes picked up, kids in bed.

I didn't get paid any.extra, but I did learn what it was like to take care of kids. Kind of helped me to want to wait a while before having them! Smiley Happy

you get what you pay for.

this is your child you're talking about. i think their care would be a priority and paying someone a fair wage is never shameful.

Yup, my granddaughter gets $10 an hour for one sweet 4-year old boy, who plays with his iPad most of the evening.

I, on the other hand, got $.50 an hour no matter how many kids there were. No tips either. This was in the 1960's, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth.

I sometimes wonder about the kids I baby sat for back in the old days. How did they turn out!? I am actually STILL friends with someone who babysat ME, as a kid..

I know and associate with all of the kids and the families that I babysat for. some of "kids" were only a few years younger than me.
