Usually about $10 an hour depending on how many kids and if they have to feed them, etc...

Tam- In the "old days" of babysitting I never got paid extra for feeding the kids, putting them to bed, doing baths. It was part of the 50 cents an hour! Of course my favorite family always had a meal ready for me to serve or the kids had already been fed. I might sit for 6-7 hours at night and I was happy to get $5-8 for my 'trouble'. I was also picked up and brought home.

I remember getting $50 for staying the weekend while they went away. I was happy. 3 kids, one of whom was an infant.

Yeah, we hardly made anything, and then we had to be driven home by some drunken husband who had been out all night partying while WE watched his kids!

Oh My Gosh--that's EXACTLY what happened to me. I remember making .50 cents an hour for people who were LOADED (financially). One lady was married to some big wig that owned a huge Company and horse farm in Lexington, she got a divorce and got millions. She remarried and moved to Indianapolis. I remember another couple who paid me a bit better, but her DH was a big-name attorney here in town and an alcoholic. He died many years ago. He would drive me home (thank goodness one street up) with glazed over eyes. I wouldn't get home until like 2 a.m.

I remember being so glad to turn 16 and be able to drive MYSELF home from babysitting jobs!

I didn't get my license until just before my 18th birthday so I was always picked up and brought home. Many times it was the mom who drove me home late at night-especially if the dad was tipsy.

One night, coming home, we witnessed a motorcycle accident in front of the fire station. He drove me home and then went back to the scene.

Our son and DIL have 4 children ranging from 3 to (almost) 9. They pay $20 an hour for a babysitter. My DIL said the base rate in their area is $10/hr then extra for each child.

I was a $.50@hour babysitter regardless whether there was 1 child or 5.

Why would anybody let their kids get driven home by somebody who was drinking?

Because everyone had different mindsets about such things 40+ years ago...

And lots of people didn't put their kids in car seats or even wear 'gasp!' seatbelts.....

$10-15 per hour is the going rate around here.

I too babysat for 50 cents per hour when I was a teen and 1.00 per hour for every hour after midnight.

We have 2 toddlers and pay our teenage babysitter $15 an hour. We pay her a bit more than the going rate because she is excellent and in demand.
