speaking of knowing neighbors (a little humor):

There is a gentlemen who walks his little dog almost everyday by my home.  Once in awhile I see him "stop" out front and one day I was outside he said "I always admire how nicely you keep your property & outside decorations for each season."

That being said: today I took a older friend of mine to a doctors appointment.  We go into office & I see this man - I said "hi how are you?" No answer in fact, he looked at me a little perplexed.

My friend went into dr. this man said to me "do I know you?" I told him yes, etc....he said "oh you live a few houses down from us".

I just shook my head!!!!  Guess I didn't leave a "neighborly" impression on him!!!

I live in a Manhattan highrise.  We're fairly friendly.   Friendly enough to knock on a neighbor's door if we need something, but totally respect each other's privacy.   We run into each other in the laundry room, the mailboxes, the concierge office or Starbucks, or the supermarket.  Many of us belong to the same Church.

It's a really small world ....living here ... I met an older woman who grew up in the same parish as I did in Queens and went to the same private HS as I did; a man whose Iriish ancestors from Dublin lived in the same small PA town as my Irish ancestors from Donegal.  According to census records, they lived on the same street more than 100 years ago.

Houses are far apart and buried in trees, so I never see anyone, which I love.  I did know a former neighbor who passed, in his nineties, several years ago, but hardly ever saw him.  He had been living here forever, so he would think nothing of walking onto someone's property and looking around, ever asked a contractor to open our gate so he could come onto the property, good thing my contractor knew better.  The main reason I have a security gate, to keep strangers and solicitors out.

People on the other side have come and gone, house sold four times since we have been here, never knew any of them. Smiley Happy

We only have distant neighbors on each side of us. The lake is across from my home and we have deep woods in the back. Our neighbors are wonderful! We all look out for each other. Woman Happy

Yes, we are lucky. We have good neighbors. When we moved into our home several years ago we probably got 4 or 5 bottles or wine, a couple of casseroles and several desserts. They came over and introduced themselves one by one and were just really nice. I'd never had an experience where so many did that, maybe one or two but not like here. I try to do the same and when I am baking, I will double or triple a recipe so I can give a few extra out to neighbors. If we see each other out getting the mail or doing other things we stop and chat with each if we have time. Sometimes you are in a rush and that just can't be helped but I would say we have a pretty good relationship with most of our neighbors closest to our house. Thankfully.
