@katie1859 wrote:As a person who divorced and had to raise 5 kids alone, I had so many jobs.
Sometimes I had a job and then a side hustle. The job that nearly broke me was at U.P.S.,
and for anyone who knows that employment there always starts loafing and unloading packages, BIG packages, and it's all timed.
I remember on Sundays taking the kids to church, it was summer and bruises were all over my arms and legs. I was embarrassed. At times, I was so sore I couldn't walk lol.
I had a back injury, and they fired me for it.
@katie1859 Welcome!🥰 I am SO sorry you had that experience with UPS!😔 I would NEVER have imagined the harsh working environment there! It is SO unfortunate that a back injury was perhaps a blessing in disguise because you no longer had to work under those conditions, and moved on hopefully to better things!!😊
THANK you SO much for caring to share!🤗

My favorite job was as an administrator for a high-tech company: I had my own office and DIDN'T HAVE TO ANSWER PHONES ! Instead of being at everyone's beck-and-call, they were at mine.
My absolutely worst job was as a receptionist for a business that processed disability claims for Boeing. Oy, the stories I could tell!
I also worked as a temp for a few years and, again, the stories I could tell you!

@cjm61 wrote:@SandySparkles I don't think many people realize when speaking to customer service/representative, it is just a person with limited control and doing their best job with the tools they are given.
My sister-in-law worked at Kaiser also but at the reception desk. We always debated who got the worst abuse. I felt that people were far more likely to yell and scream on the phone than they would in person. I still feel this way, which has enabled me to be much more compassionate towards CS.
@cjm61 Welcome back!🥰 I WHOLEHEARTEDLY concur, with this also, but there are people who will yell over the phone and be QUITE aggressive in person! THOSE people scare me!😄 I have the utmost respect for ANYONE in customer service!❤
THANK you SO much for caring to share another perspective!🤗

@smoochy wrote:I worked in a profession I didn't like for forty-six years. When I was 19 I had just spent two semesters in college taking Intro to linguistics, communications 101 etc. But I was clueless about what I wanted to do. Back then (1970), I really just wanted to be a wealthy socialite wife of a doctor or CEO. But alas. 😅 Also a liberal arts degree was considered iffy, as far as getting jobs. So I let my mother talk me into going to nursing school. My talents and true love at that time were in the arts-singing, English lit, communication and writing. Least skilled in and not interested in math and science. Yeah. I spent most of my career job hopping. Luckily I made an excellent wage at every job. My last ten years or so were in the hospice field, which I liked more than anything else I had done. The ability to help ease suffering for my dying patients and to emotionally support their families was special. That said, you can imagine the relief I felt the day I retired in 2018.
These past six years have been the best of my life.
Now at 72, I am still indulging my love of vocal performance in a big acappella show chorus. And reading. And stewarding my little free library. The things I might have done for a career I'm now doing as hobbies 🥰
@smoochy Welcome!🥰 My most sincere apologies for the late welcome!😊 I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post, and like how you experienced multiple careers, but ended up enjoying the MOST rewarding of all of them!❤ Being a hospice nurse takes a SPECIAL kind of person, with a loving and compassionate spirit.👍 To now be able to do what you LOVE ❤ in retirement, is truly rewarding! You seem to be living your best life, and I am SO happy for you!!😁

@SaveTheTurtles wrote:I haven't had many jobs in my working years. Tended to stay put. I'll start with the worst first:
McDonalds when I was a teenager. I thought it would be fun at the register taking orders. But, they put me on the deep fryer making french fries. I lasted 1 day.
I loved selling yellow pages advertising for the bulk of my career back in it's heyday. I then went into collections for them. I loved that too. I spent 26 years doing this until it was sold in 2012 and I was eligible to retire.
My current job is in purchasing which I've been doing since 2012. I LOVE this job the most. Hey, I get to shop and buy stuff all day everyday. Doesn't get much better than that!
I'm going to retire for real at the end of the year and am looking forward to the next chapter!
@SaveTheTurtles Welcome!🥰 I am revisiting the thread, and see that I did not address your retirement; though I meant to!😊 I would like to CONGRATULATE you early and wish you a HAPPY retirement, as you begin this WELL deserved next chapter!😁 May it be ALL you ever dreamed it would!!❤❤

Sandy--did you hit your kids with the spoon or just pound it to make threatening noise?

My first job was at an insurance company. I was in charge of the files. It was easy and I liked it.
My favorite job was working at a Christmas House. It was a big old house filled with Christmas decor. Of course it was a seasonal job but I loved it.
