@ECBG

You did good.  I would have also said something to her.

Any parent who leaves children unattended in a car is lazy, stupid and selfish.

Unfortunately we live in a really messed up society.  I wouldn't be surprised if you saw her on the news someday - crying because she left her car running with the children in the car as she ran into a convenience store to grab something.

I have zero pity for these people.  I feel so bad for those kids  Smiley Sad

Did she come in to drop off the taxes?  Or was she going to be sitting in an office having her taxes done?  If she was running into the office to have a copy of her license made, I don't think it's a big deal.  We're talking 3 or 4 minutes.

If she was going to sit while her taxes were being done, that's definitely a different story.

Exactly!

If she was only in there for 3 - 4 minutes that's hardly worth calling the cops, or CPS over.

Agree.  An 8 year old is usually ok to be alone for that length of time.  I can't imagine this woman was leaving her children in the car alone (with the engine off in 45 degree weather) to sit in the tax office for an hour.  If that was her plan, I totally agree with the OPs action.  I would not call law enforcement unless the woman was drunk or high or there was some type of obvious abuse. One thing we know about this woman- she works.

I would not leave 2 small children alone in a car even for 3- 4 minutes I can't imagine doing that. jmo.

I had a neighbor that left her baby locked in the car and went in a restaurant to eat. She didn't give it a thought. Her husband did and went to sit with the baby.He had a conscience

She wasn't some poor frazzled  mother, either. She did stuff like leaving her baby in the tub to play ,with a1/2 inch of water in the tub.  An older neighbor finally had heard enough , when Margo said she left the baby in the crib ,all alone, while she made a quick run to the store, to pick up a few items. She said if you ever do that again, I will report you,

She didn't come from a poor home, either. Her dad was athletic director for West Point.  Her mother was good friends with President Ike's dil, Barbara, I think her name was.

You did the right thing.

@cherry, not sure why this is mentioned.

Exactly.  No one should leave a child unattended in a car - or any place else even for a minute.  So many terrible things can happen - people have no common sense.

You did a good thing. Me? I would have called law enforcement and let them take it as far as they thought necessary. I doubt this was the 1st time, and may not be the last.

My concern would be the children's safety, long term. Too many nowadays have children, but in my opinion, are not parents.

It was ever thus. I was often left in the car when I was under 6. I think today's parents are more informed than a lot of parents in the 50's....

LOL. Makes sense to me not to have to unbuckle, unstrap, dress, and tote 2 children into a building that is close by. If the children were being parked in a parking garage and left, no. But to run inside to drop off some documents, I see no problem with. Espeially if the area was not busy, as the OP suggest and one of the children is 8.  And I most certainly have common sense.

If this woman left the children in the car, why would she even bring it up to you if they couldn't be seen? She must have had no idea the danger involved..

Comments justifying young babies or children left alone minutes or longer very disturbing. Makes me wonder what other misfortune the children survived. People say parents should have classes be certified to have children. Wouldn't change anything, Sad but true! Some people are not fit to have children.

An 8 year old isn't mature enough to care for an 8 month old. Suppose the baby started chocking on their bottle? No 8 year old would know how to deal with it...
