It was wise to tell her to bring them inside, but do you seriously think this was the first time she did this? I would have left the kids home with my husband, aka their father.

OMGosh, I'm sure that's not the first time that happened.

I would have said something to her, asking her if she does that often.

I probably would have called the police. Nobody should be that negligent with their children.

@Bri21 that is exactly what I was thinking. I raised my DD as a single parent if I did not have a sitter then she came everywhere with me. I would never do that.

What were your other impressions of this young mother and her children? Were they clean? Well-behaved? Did Mom appear stoned or overwrought or psycho? How did she react to your "teachable moment" lecture?

It's a difficult situation...on one hand, she has 2 strikes against her right off the bat: driving without license, leaving babies unattended. On the other hand, she's young and made a stupid, irresponsible, poor, potentially dangerous choice, but adding a CS nightmare on top of whatever all she's dealing with may not be the best thing for her or her children. On the other other hand (!), maybe a CS nightmare is just what she needs to straighten up her act!

You're right...I probably would have given her "the look" AND a stern lecture (risking my job for the greater good), ending with: "And I know most of the LE in this small town, so if I ever so much as hear a peep about you neglecting your children ever again, I'll report you."

Are you able to surreptitiously ask your LE contacts about her? Would they be willing to "check up on her" unofficially? Maybe an anonymous call to the church nearest her home requesting visits and/or mentoring for her would be beneficial?

Did she come in to drop off the taxes? Or was she going to be sitting in an office having her taxes done? If she was running into the office to have a copy of her license made, I don't think it's a big deal. We're talking 3 or 4 minutes.

If she was going to sit while her taxes were being done, that's definitely a different story.

If she was only in there for 3 - 4 minutes that's hardly worth calling the cops, or CPS over.
