You can now hum or sing to search for a song using a new feature from Google

[ Edited ]

Beginning today, Google is adding a feature called Hum to Search. The feature lets you search for music.  It's available in the Google App for iOS, Android and with Google Assistant. All you do is ask Google "What's the song?" or touch a new button that says "search a song" and then sing, hum or whistle your song. You'll get results and will be able to listen to your song afterwards. There are better how to's online than mine, so if you're interested, use a better how to. I haven't tried this out yet so I don't know how much of a song you need to input. You need to use your microphone to use the feature.

I found a better explanation.

Quoted from a site called NME in an article titled "Google now lets users search for a song by singing, humming and whistling," by Jackson Langford. Oct. 16, 2029

"Users can access the ‘Hum To Search’ feature by opening the ‘Google Search’ app or using the Google Search Widget. Once you tap on the microphone icon, you can ask “what’s this song?” or click the ‘Search a song’ button.

Additionally, if using Google Assistant, users can ask “Hey Google, what’s this song?”.

From there, users will have a 10 – 15 second window to hum, whistle or sing the melody of a song they’re thinking of, and Google will deliver a variety of matches, beginning with the highest per cent match."

I'm surprised they didn't come up with that sooner.  When I hear a song and don't know the name of it I've always tried to catch some of the lyrics and then I've googled the lyrics.  The correct song usually comes up.

Many years ago BC (Before Computers) I had a Beatles song in my head and just had to know which one it was.  I walked into a large record store (remember those?) and asked one of the floor people if I sang part of the song could they identify it for me. Felt pretty stupid and people were staring but he knew it right away.  Guess my singing was passable. It was "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party" which is a great song but not one of their biggest hits.

All I need is Google snickering at my vocal efforts.

That's pretty impressive! I was impressed when I found out I could search the name of a song I was listening to from a movie or somewhere by tapping the "what's this song" icon and the name would immediately pop up. I bet I've used that feature hundreds of times.

But now we can just hum the tune? I always thought the words were the key to the search. This will definitely be interesting to try. I hope it works!

I figured better than to hope was to try it out and it does work! I started out with the easily recognizable "Over the Rainbow" and up came the results to three different versions of the song. Next I thought I'd try a less recognizable Taylor Swift song--one from her newest album. The song is called "betty." I thought the chances were low but sure enough, up came 3 songs, one of which was "betty."

Thanks for sharing  @Mindy D , I think this is awesome! Smiley Happy

I guess if I could sing I could use that...  Can I search for a song playing on TV or another device?

I'll try it. I've been using Siri for this too.

I've used the "SoundHound" app on my iPhone and iPad for years for the same kind of song ID search...  wonder if Google's feature is similar?
