Volunteer drivers will be taxed by the mile instead of for each gallon of gas during a four-month pilot program starting in December.
The transportation department’s program will involve 100 recruits who will theoretically pay 1.2 cents for each mile they drive, the Denver Post reported (http://dpo.st/2g0DyIb).
“It would be similar to electricity and water — you pay for what you use,” department spokeswoman Amy Ford said. “This is about fairness.”
Ford said the 22 cents per gallon of gas that people are taxed now does not keep pace with inflation or construction costs.
The model could replace the state’s gas tax.

So in other words, you can drive a huge gas guzzling Hummer or a tank and pay the same as someone driving a hybrid?
That's silly...we need more efficient cars, not less!
No more weekend road trips to see the fall foliage or trips to the big malls to shop. Stay home - you'll be taxed for driving and spending money in restaurants and hotels. Buy everything online - why drive 40 miles round trip to the mall - let them go out of business.

Really, it would not affect me one bit. First, I don't drink much soda...... Coke or Ginger Ale are the choice I have......regular, not diet, as it makes me sick to my stomach.
Have never been much on soda, and as far as I'm concerned, the soda companies would go broke if they depended on me......

It would if we had a tax on soda and it makes me angry. I drink diet pop. I am on weight watchers and that is a treat I can actually have. I don't eat cakes or cookies. Why not tax those instead???? If they tax diet soda, they are taking away one of my few eating/drinking pleasures. Burns me up.
Edit: I realize they aren't taking soda away, but they are punishing us for drinking it.

I stopped drinking sodas (regardless of sweeteners used) over a decade ago so a tax would not make any difference in my life..well, other than having my to listen to most everyone else complain about it! ![]()

I disagree; it is about the government taking away our freedom to make our own decisions. It goes way beyond being taxed. The tax on things is a baby step.
