IF the plane hits SEVERE turbulence, she could go "flying about".

But then again, so could anybody who is walking to and from the lav.

Same difference.

I have not flown in quite a while, but I thought when seat belts were to be buckled , everyone was required to be seated and buckled?

I had to ask for one once on a small airplane. I was humiliated.

I absolutely understand. I was, too.

There's now tactful way to suggest a seatbelt extension. I think if this really happened to me I wouldn't have the cohones to do the right thing and say something to the woman and if that didn't do the trick, then go to the flight attendant. IMO saying it here is easy but if you're really presented with the situation it's another story.

I think there is. She could have quietly said, If you're having trouble with your seatbelt, why don't you ring for a flight attendant? I'm sure they can take care of it.

See? No mention at all of her size and no embarrassment.

And, yes, Hi, I am new here (I just thought I'd mention it).

Re: Would You Have Spoken Up?

The belts are not all cut the same length. I usually have no trouble fastening (and I do have some girth in the middle), but I have ridden in a couple of seats where the seat belt wouldn't fasten. (I asked for the extender, and flight attendant discreetly handled it). Maybe this was the first time the lady had experienced it.

Yes and before takeoff if I noticed this right away.

Mind your own business. It's her skin let her suffer the consequences. If U R uncomfortable, then ask the flight attendant to reassign your seat. This is not a mommy state we want to live in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's the PERFECT solution...are you Ms. Manners in real life?

I carry my own seatbelt extension which worked like a charm. Funny, I never thought I would use it but I did on my last trip. I got mine on Amazon and it saved me the embarrassment of asking. Even if you are a little plump all the seat belts may or may not fit.

I'm also overweight but have, so far, never had an issue with the seat belt. Honestly, I'm not sure what I would do if it doesn't fit - guess I never thought about an extender. Maybe this woman didn't realize there was an alternative. Depending on the cost, I think I'll go on Amazon now to pick one up.

I'm not an extensive traveler, but I have had the opportunity in the last couple of years to take a few foreign airlines (TAM and KLM). The seatbelts in both airlines were much longer than the US airlines that I'm used to.

I honestly did not know if I would need it and after 6 flights with no issues I almost did not take it with me the last time but I am glad that I did. I put it in my purse and I go straight through security. It is worth it to me for piece of mind because the belts are not standard sizes or so it seems. Some fit, some don't.
