My daughter told me something yesterday that blew me away. I don't think it's exclusive to her situation either.
She said while taking care of customers in a fast food restaurant, she is sometimes asked "when are you going to get a real job?"
As if any job isn't a real job!! They are instructed NEVER to be unpleasant with a customer.
I said I would merely stop what I was doing and stare back at them!!
I just wonder what possesses anyone to say something like that to a total stranger.

Ignorance. Pure and simple.

I would agree with Topaz.
And I think they're passive aggressive types who have to do this in order to make themselves feel superior.

U post on this forum and know that many people are:
discourteous, rude, lack of manners etc. This is a put down comment. I would tell the customer: "this is a real job".

There is no 'polite' response to such an inquiry, I would continue serving the customer while not acknowledging the question.

People say awful things all the time. If it's something she's heard more than once, maybe she can come up with a good comeback.
Have you had the talk with her about how to handle people like that and not to take it personally? I had it with my girl when she got her first job in a bookstore as a teen. She was so surprised by the things some people said to her.

Agreed. Sometimes the best response, is no response. Saying something, anything in reply could land you in trouble with the boss.

As a former waitress, people think they own you when you work in a service job.
Wouldn't it be fun to say "when are you going to eat in a fancy restaurant?" I know she can't say that but sometimes it is fun to think up snappy comebacks even if you can't use them!
I agree with those who recommend saying nothing.

Obviously that person/s have never worked in a fast food place. It's a real job and can be a difficult job at that.
