Re: Why would anyone say this?

People who smart off to food servers better be sure they have their food before they pop off if you know what I mean.

It's not an urban legend that they get even.

Re: Why would anyone say this?

Just have her say Thank you! and smile!

People can be mean, no matter what line of work you are in.

One time I called on an auto dealer. He old me to come back with a very complicated but lucrative proposal. It took me almost a week to get all the research he asked for.

When I went back for the second appointment - he had me wait for over an HOUR until he could see me.

When I went in and passed him a copy of the proposal - he ripped it up and threw it in the garbage...smiling as he did it.

I asked him why he ripped up my work - I had put a lot of effort into a proposal that met all the criteria he was looking for??? He said it was to make sure I NEVER would come back, bother him and try to sell him advertising again. He said if he had just said "no" - I would have continued to "bother him"...so he made me do a lot of work to teach me a lesson.

I told him the lesson I learned was to tell everyone I knew never to buy a car from him - and I left.

Of course I went back to the office and told my manager and everyone else what he had done, the jerk.

That night he died of a sudden unexpected heart attack at the age of 54.

Too bad another customer doesn't respond to the jerk.

Say, "I take it you eat at fast food restaurants because your salary doesn't allow you to eat at real restaurants?" LOL {#emotions_dlg.devil2}

That's a great response! I'd definitely use it if it was my last day at the job, LOL.

There is no 'polite' response to such an inquiry, I would continue serving the customer while not acknowledging the question.

I agree. Slobs like that don't deserve a response. The deserve a super sized drink thrown in their face, but not a good idea.

ITA... I am SO tired of people just being blatantly mean for no reason.

I agree about ignoring those comments.

Totally ignoring it sends a loud & clear message without words.

Yes. Classless has nothing to stand on when it is confronted with class.

Re: Why would anyone say this?

Obviously said by someone who has never worked in food service, and doesn't have a clue as to the challenges. I know people who worked as cooks and waitresses their entire life, simply because they loved it and enjoyed it. The one person who immediately pops into my mind, has been dead for 25 years, but I still hear people my age and older, mention her little cafe and her homemade meringue pies. She made a difference in this town, and is remembered fondly for pouring her heart and soul into what she loved to do. No one should be insulted by doing honest work. Sadly, you can't fix stupid.

Agree! I would never be so rude as to make a comment like that to my server. They work their buns off to make a half-decent wage w/ their tips - and many are young adults, college students or grads, trying to make ends meet. If an ignoramus makes such a comment, they deserve what the server "serves" them!

'Read my lips': Just smile and cheerfully carry on! Continue smiling as long as the person is still in the restaurant. In fact, continue to smile, being a valuable employee. It will all 'pay off' in the long run.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

She could smile and say ""I love this job. It is really helping me with my book on human behavior.""
