Re: Why don't the debates show the name of each person that is speaking?

Yesterday on some news type program I was watching, there was an American reporter somewhere in the Mid East, possibly Iran. Anyway, he held up pictures of some of the debate participants, and I was surprised that many of the people on the street knew who Trump and Bush were, and they actually guessed Nancy Pelosi with Carly's picture. They must watch American television on the internet or something, but they are actually more informed than some of our citizens. AND I do not mean anyone here on this chat board, so don't get your knickers in a bunch.

I think it is so pathetic when news people go to places like Harvard and Yale or stop young people on the street and show them politicians....one picture they used was Joe Biden....one young woman said he was VP.....uh but said Al Gore!! Very sad and scary!

I agree with you but I think most young people don't get into politics until they are more mature, so that doesn't surprise me.

I have to disagree with that statement about young people not being interested in politics. My 3 boys are very interested and read several papers daily for the info and the op ed pieces. They always have been interested in current events.

Anyone remember on The Tonight Show w Jay Leno when he used to do a bit called 'Jay Walking'? How many times we laughed at some of the responses he got while walking around some large place near the studio in Burbank. It was sort of scary about how ignorant some people were of basic general facts that we all should know-- example: what are the 3 branches of government and how many senators does each state get-- a typical question. Or who is this person-- Biden's picture shown and someone thinking he's someone on a commercial!

I was really surprised that people in the Mid East would know any of our perspective candidates.

and then we have Senator Chuck Schumer-- ""So I would urge my Republican colleagues, no matter how strong they feel — you know, we have three branches of government: we have a House, the Senate, we have a President, and all three of us are going to have to come together and give some. "

Not all, of course, mine was interested in high school, but I do think the interest grows as people mature.

BTW, Jimmy Kimmel does the man on the street questions.  It's amazing how many are clueless.

This is a live debate with cameras cutting back and forth between the modeators and the candidates -- especiallly as other candidates attempt to jump in.

This is not something that was done earlier in the day where the names can be added in post-production.

And seriously, at this point, interested parties should already know who the candidates are.  One can spend a bit of time looking up this information on one's own rather than being spoon-fed the names from producers.

It's not a matter of "being spoon fed"; truly that's insulting to many different groups of our population. Also, people from all over the world are watching to see what may loom in the future.  Think a bit beyond your opinion. There are students and other young people watching for the first time and, there are senior citizens that don't have the knowledge or ability to use computers, and there are new citizens who take this very seriously but, need a bit of help. (I'm sure there are many other groups I'm forgetting at the moment and if I left anyone out, I apologise). They may know Bush, Christie, Trump, Paul...but the others may be new faces to them. They are watching to learn and there's nothing wrong with not knowing a few out of 8, or 9 candidates at this time. No question or reaching out for help is wrong! What IS wrong is making people feel l"ess than" because they reach out for answers. Some of those candidates rattle me with their utilitarian and senseless answers, but that's my opinion....which everyone is entitled to.

It would've taken nothing more than a computer and printer to make banners to put on each podium in a simple readable font.

One can be compassionate and understanding of people~fellow Americans and human beings. And one may realise that we are all the same at the end of the day and asking for knowledge is the most natural of things to do, asking for knowledge is asking for power.

Only about 30% of registered party members vote in the primary. This is a primary debate. Those people that care enough to show up and vote in the primaries also take the time to know who the actual candidates are. At least in much higher numbers than in the general election.

I agree with you....I have friends who are expatriots and I was asked about a number of the lesser known candidates.

In the first debate, I think it was Lindsay Graham who stated that Hispanics were already Americans.  Is he saying that those who live in North America, Latin America and South America routinely call themselves Americans?  When someone asks a tourist in Europe if they are American I always thought they were referring to a U.S. citizen.  Anyone know?

I would safely say that they are asking about people living in the USA when asking  if you are "American".  I live in Italy 6 months out of the year and the only confusion I hear is distinguishing Americans and Canadians and where they live much to the chagrin of Canadians. Many Italians believe  Americans live in N America but not Canadians.  I have Latin American friends and they don't refer to themselves as American.

Re: Why don't the debates show the name of each person that is speaking?

i came back in here to apologize.  i thought it was a pretty funny image ... the ballots at elections with pictures of the candidates.  (presumably instead of their names?)

anyway,

over this weekend, i was sharing this notion that had been presented here about having the candidates names on the podiums during the debates ... and my friend (shocking to me) said that this  would have been helpful while they were watching too.

so sorry if i have offended ...
