I work at a university. We have a lot of them in the Spring. We have a large pond, and I like to watch them swim as a family. Yes they are protected. They mate for life. Only after a death of a mate, do they search for another. That might be a reason they are protected, as it might naturally control their own population. I don't know. As for migration, the babies have to taught by the parents. Otherwise they can't migrate. Years ago a lot of older birds were killed, and the offsping could not migrate.
They are very aggressive. And I mean very. I've seen them go after anyone that bothers them or come too near the babies.

Indeed so, @AngusandBuddhasMom. From the "Racing Extinction" film I mentioned: "As one scientist says in the film, 'Humanity has become the asteroid.'... 'There are people who are killing endangered species, and they know it,' says Psihoyos, who is also a veteran wildlife photographer and director of the Oceanic Preservation Society. 'But there are also people who are killing endangered species, and they don’t know it. And that’s the rest of us.'"

I agree @dooBdoo
Reminds me of the qoute in Dicken's Christmas Carol when the third spirit revealed the two urchins huddling under his robe:
'They are Man's,' said the Spirit, looking down upon
them. 'And they cling to me, appealing from their fathers.
This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both,
and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy,
for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the
writing be erased. Deny it.' cried the Spirit, stretching out
its hand towards the city. 'Slander those who tell it ye.
Admit it for your factious purposes, and make it worse.
And abide the end.'

There is a lovely park with a lake near Pittsburgh that has a swimming area and beach. The geese over ran it and it got so dirty with their droppings it was no longer safe for humans and had to be closed. It remains closed because they remove some geese and more move in quick as a wink. It's a state park and the state has tried to deal with this but , honestly, what can they do.

Oh my goodness...I've read through every reply here and some of the things that have been said really have me SMH.
Blaming the animals for their changing migratory actions? When it's we humans who have destroyed so much of their natural habitat and affected climate change. It's not as if the animals (birds, deer, whatever) had any say in the matter. WE needed to build more and bigger houses. WE needed to drain lakes and marshes so we could...yep, build even more on land that shouldn't have been built on.
Deer carry Lyme Disease? Do you know that the "deer tick", responsible for the spread of Lyme Disease, is actually carried on rodents, too? Generally field mice. When the mouse population booms, so does the tick population.
We just had five beautiful deer in our yard last night and we were thrilled to see them back after a long, hard winter. Two of the younger ones were gamboling about, full of the joys of spring.
I will never understand humans thinking we are the be all and end all. Having said that, if there is an "end all" to this planet, we all know who will be responsible and it's not the innocent animals.
Sorry to everyone who is inconvenienced by pesky animals. Imagine how inconvenienced they are by us, too! ![]()

Thank you for offering this. I have added it to a list of important things. I have hundreds of birds that visit us every day (Yes, it gets expensive) and I enjoy each and every one. This website contains some great information that has taught me a lot, and answers sooooo many questions.

I lived in a place they loved to stay year round. In order to attempt to move them out the city had a sound machine that sounded like canon's going off which went off at different times. No it didn't work.
