You know what, MistriT. You finally did it. You made my blood pressure go up. I will not take instruction from someone like you on this issue. Since I have had my mother, her sister and her brother all three die from cigarette smoking I am passionate about this issue. My concern is for the young people who smoke and are ruining their lives.

I don't know WHAT your concern is except to make an argument as usual. Noel started this thread about cigarette smoking and that is what I am talking about. Take your little devil face and....

You know what? My father is currently dying because of his poor diet choices from a form of cancer we were ignorant of, so don't play that card with me.

Everybody already knows that smoking kills people, so what good are your arguments doing? At least my arguments are aimed at getting people to stop compartmentalizing and selectively demonizing, for the purpose of recognizing how counterproductive it is. When you take one thing and demonize it, while you yourself are engaging in unhealthy behaviors like overeating, you are being willfully ignorant. Since there are more obese people in this country than there are smokers, that adds up to a lot of willful ignorance.

I'm with you. I don't know why some people will do anything to change the subject, to try to control a thread.

Of course there are other dangers in life, including what we eat, which I have started threads on in the past. But the attempt to make most of us drop the subject of why people smoke just doesn't make me want to go there.

Those are user taxes - and user taxes are one kind of tax I support. After all, for many smokers the rest of us taxpayers will be picking up their Medicaid and Medicare bills when they hit the health wall later in life. Let smokers and drinkers pay their dues while they can.

It used to be called a Sin Tax. I still hear that phrase every once in awhile.

Smoking is more of a direct cause of illness and death. A lot of people can drink socially without any ill effects. I suppose it could be said that it's not a one to one relationship.

How do you figure? Aside from the accidental deaths caused by alcohol-associated incidents, drinking alcohol also raises your cancer risk. So--at least in regards to my own health--if I smoke a cigarette once in awhile, is it really any different than if I have a drink once in awhile? Nope.

My 2 children and one DIL have all quit smoking within the last year!
