Noel {#emotions_dlg.wub} Hope you are having a lovely day today!

Somebody mentioned pets - One time, quite a few years ago, I was on ebay looking at stuff for the bird and I found this lady who was selling these really lovely little towels with the species of parrot and your bird's name embroidered on.

I thought that was a great idea and they looked so nice. I wanted one for him, so I got one made from her.

O-MG! When I got that I could not believe that this brand new towel was SOOOOOOOOO (even more than that!) saturated in smoke. It was truly sickening. It took me two weeks to wash and soak the smoke out of that thing.

Found out this woman has birds and smokes! That is just unbelievable. One has every right to destroy their own body but to do that to those poor birdies just - dam! I can't even think about it because it's upsetting me. I've seen birds that were taken out of homes of smokers. It's horrible what it does to them. Dogs, cats, other pets too. :'(

Good point, CB! The dangers of second hand smoke not only to friends and family, but to pets.

BWT, I wanted to tell you that I sent the low pressure cooker back. I really wanted to try it but it's huge! It looked smaller on TV, I assumed maybe it was the same size as a crock pot but it was big and heavy.

Hope you are well, my friend Smile

ITA. I never could figure out the attraction to smoking. I never had the desire to smoke, even when years ago it seemed everyone smoked. Always thought it was a smelly, gross and disgusting habit.

OMG yes. The smoker 'smell'. I am convinced they do not realize how bad they smell. {#emotions_dlg.blush}

I am totally mystified. Besides the fact that everybody knows it can kill you (my nieces smoke after they watched my mother die a horrible cancer death from cigarettes);

it is also VERY expensive. I understand those who are already addicted and just cannot (or won't) quit but why do young people still take it up? It costs as much as a car payment!!

Scottie, I am so sorry about your mom,.....young people often think nothing bad will ever happen to them, no matter their life style, they feel strong and healthy and believe it will always be so, it is the same as any other unhealthy habit, they get something from it and will only give it up if and when they see it as a problem.

My mom lost her jaw to cancer. She was a beautiful woman and had to live for years with the bottom of her face literally caved in. Then it took 5 operations to restore her jawline...she never did look the same.

She actually smoked in the hospital bed shortly after coming out of oral surgery. The hospital was furious with her (it was a cancer research hospital!)

She was never able to stop. She ultimately died from kidney failure due to high blood pressure. The doctors told her that her 2-3 pack a day habit kept her BP so high that her kidneys shut down. Even then she didn't believe them...she thought smoking was GOOD for you!

I ask the same thing about why people eat so bad when they know that the saturated, trans fats sugar. simple carbs etc. are killing them.... why would you eat something just because it tastes good??, or just because it is Christmas or for whatever reason people eat wrong--- what ever the excuse. I would never consume food that is not good for me as I choose to be healthy as I can. People have to want to be healthy... and want to not smoke or eat wrong more than getting the few moments of pleasure(?) that these two things give you.

There's not a one to one relationship. Even a little smoking will hurt us, not true with Christmas cookies, nor are Christmas cookies addictive.

Sugar IS addictive.

It can be, especially if someone eats a large amount, but it's not 1:1.

For anyone interested, Live Science has a good summary on addiction (including gambling and sugar) and the difference between those and drug addiction.

No, smokers do not smell it themselves. When I quit, the first thing I noticed was how awful everyone smelled when they came back from their smoke break. I had no idea I smelled like that all those years. (And I'm not a "smoker basher". I smoked for many, many years and have a bunch of friends who smoke.)

Re: Why Do People Smoke Anyway?

NoelSeven, I think this has something to do with Personal Freedoms.

You have the right to do may things, whether others agree with you or not. Over the last few years the right to smoke and have others be sickened or killed by second hand smoke has limited that right. I am a reformed smoker, free for the last 39 years, that said, I don't care if others do if I don't have to smell it. It gives me a asthma attack.

I will say though, I have to wonder why the new push to legalize marijuana seems to be acceptable to many when second hand smoke which may make another person sick or high with out their permission seems fine.

Any responses welcomed.

Re: Why Do People Smoke Anyway?

The first 72 hours is the hardest. After that it is mostly habit. Or at least that is what they were saying back when I quit. And I'd tend to agree with that. I slept a lot the first 72 hours over a long weekend. Even had a few dreams that I smoked, I'd wake up mad at myself for a minute or so until I realized I only had dreamed I smoked. Crazy huh?

Re: Why Do People Smoke Anyway?

As a smoker or former smoker I started because it was cool. A child of the early 70's. My husband also smoke so if I quit he would try but as he enjoys it so much he would start again and of course I had to join because he stank so bad the only way I could be around him was to stink just like him.

I needed to really quit due to health but then of course a lot of things stated happening and it helped with stress. Back in May we heard about a vapor shop and visited. Neither one of us has touched a cigarette since then and I can finally breath once again. This has been a god send for me because my husband prefers these over cigarettes and I can taper down and then quit and he can carry on without stinking.

I have 2 kids and neither smoke. I have drilled in their heads about it since forever and they have seen how hard it is too quit. That being said if someone wants to smoke it is their life. I would sooner see that then a drunk getting behind the wheel and mowing someone down. Now we have the legalization of weed in some states.
