It's an enjoyable, relaxing addiction that is very personal. You don't need others or special places or circumstances to enjoy the feeling.

I agree, I also think it enhances some situations. And I'm pretty sure there was research some years ago that showed smoking reduced anxiety.

Which brings us back to why do people take it up in today's day and age when the information is out there about what it does to health.

I ask the same thing about why people eat so bad when they know that the saturated, trans fats sugar. simple carbs etc. are killing them.... why would you eat something just because it tastes good??, or just because it is Christmas or for whatever reason people eat wrong--- what ever the excuse. I would never consume food that is not good for me as I choose to be healthy as I can. People have to want to be healthy... and want to not smoke or eat wrong more than getting the few moments of pleasure(?) that these two things give you.

There's not a one to one relationship. Even a little smoking will hurt us, not true with Christmas cookies, nor are Christmas cookies addictive.

Re: Why Do People Smoke Anyway?

Neither of my parents smoked. I did smoke for quite a few years, but not during high school. Well, I smoked weed in high school but not cigarettes.

It's odd to me that people start in this day and age. I think pretty much everybody should know, by now, how harmful it is. Plus, it is so shockingly expensive now - how can most people afford it? Last time I smoked it was $10 a CARTON for name brand 100s (less for the shorter ones) at the Indian Reservation Smoke Shop. Last time I saw, it was almost that much for ONE PACK at the grocery store.

Having smoked for all those years, however, I don't really buy the 'I can't quit because I'm addicted' thing. If you WANT to quit, you can and will quit. If you don't want to, then it's passed off as being addicted or some other lame excuse. I love to see people get to the point where they really do want to quit - and then they do. Smiley Happy

There it is! That used to be a real factor. I wonder if anyone thinks that now?

I'm sure many do. A lot of celebs smoke. Even Jessica Alba smokes (I've read she's a chain smoker), but she is always promoting a healthy, organic lifestyle.{#emotions_dlg.scared} I have even seen photos of Kate Winslet, Jennifer Aniston, and Keira Knightley smoking.

Whoa, heavy denial there.

Denial! A lot of people live in denial. About everything. It's the "easy" way, so they think.

Re: Why Do People Smoke Anyway?

People do a lot of things that are not health promoting, just because they like whatever it is.

Like eating poorly. Or drinking to excess.

People are great at denial.

Even seeing, first hand, what it does doesn't scare off someone who enjoys it. People know that liquor damages your insides, but they coninue to drink. Drugs kill brain cells, but people continue to take drugs. Certain foods can cause so much damage to individuals, but we continue to eat what we know we shouldn't because we enjoy them more than the alternatives. We have the knowledge, but still prefer to go on our merry way with our life as we see fit. Why? That IS a million dollar question.

I can't stand those who smoke in front of their children but also their pets.

Yeah, and maybe they tell themselves they still have time to quit.
