What an amazing thread this is! My brother still, has my childhood, phone number, and I do remember when it began with letters: ACademy 2........
Here is another memory of more genteel times gone by. I remember going to the hosiery section in the lovely department store downtown with my mother. You would ask the sales lady behind the counter to show, you specific brands and shades. She would then select a few, carefully pulling a stocking up over her own hand to let you decide if a particular shade or texture was right for you. Sometimes she would allow my mother to sample the stocking on her own hand before making the final, decision. ....all for stockings that were of course held up,by a garter belt or girdle, and would probably run ( be ruined ) within a few days. ...oh, and remember putting clear nail polish on top of a stocking run to prevent it from getting worse!

I remember my home phone number and both of my grandmas'.
No, but I remember "being" that operator, in rural AR. Mid '50s.

That was my first lipstick, and I would sneak it on after leaving my house when I was in junior high school (known as middle school today). Forbidden to wear makeup, I surreptitiously bought a tube of this fragrant lipstick that I wore only at school. There was one shade, as I recall. Such a yummy smell!
Oh @golding76 , indeed I do! That was my first lipstick in Jr. High, too. Unfortunately it turned my lips a very unflattering purply shade, which I realized even then. But hey, it was lipstick and I was determined to wear it lol.

Who remembers when making or receiving a long distance phone call was a very big deal and expensive? You would call the operator, give the number you wished to call, and then SHE would ask if it was to be person to person (asking for a specific person at the receiving end) or just general for whoever answered at that end. When the call was answered, you might ask to be notified when three minutes were nearly up so that you didn’t accidentally incur even higher charges. Then you would say your quick goodbyes.
There was a way to get around the higher person to person charge. Just ask for a specific person, then the receiving household was ready to say the person wasn’t there. Then they could call you back at a general, lower rate. Uh oh, lightning might be striking me for admitting to such subterfuge.

@itsmetoo wrote:Thank you for this thread! Did anyone have pop beads? You bought them from a machine like a gum ball machine but they were these plastic beads that popped together. Such great memories.
@itsmetoo I remember pop beads but I don't remember buying them in a machine. Maybe in a bag?
We used to buy them in a machine but I don't remember if we could get them in a bag too. Such great memories of 'the good old days'.
