 at the end of 6th grade a bunch us of girls were sitiing at recess. someone started the song about "  50 cents to go behind the fence..." ( with a boy, ending  up in a pregnancy).  

my mother never told us anything. if we asked she would give the thousand yard stare.   i guess she figured we would learn at school - lol we surely did!!

My Mom wisely explained to me that there would be a period soon and exactly what it all meant.  I was only twelve when it happened.  Sadly, so many parents were unable to talk about this to their kids back then as were their parents before them.  But I am thankful for those innocent years.

In the 6th grade the boys and girls were separated for lesson on our bodies, including menstruation for the girls.  That was too late for me.  I thought I was dying:/

In my 7th grade PE class the very uncomfortable teacher was making an attempt to discuss reproduction.  It was a total muddle and finally one girl asked point blank:  do you mean the man puts his ***** "there"?  Once confirmed we all groaned about our parents.

This was the early 60s.

I know cats; I don't much about birds and bees.  I do know about secks.  Of course, kids talked about it and of course we only got it half right.  But my mom wasn't afraid of the subject.  As I recall, she explained it to the girls in an age appropriate way.  Only what we needed to know.  So, it wasn't one big talk but a series of talks.  I wasn't one of those unfortunate kids who had to learn about from friends.

Seriously though, the Catholic school I attended sent a letter home to my mom stating we had to attended "You and Your Menstrual Cycle".  It was in the church basement.  It was a total blank now that I think about it.

My mother told me NOTHING.  Some neighborhood girls discussed it but I didn't think much about it.

When my "monthly visitor" came for the first time in 1966, my mom gave me the equipment and told me to dispose of these by wrapping them in a brown paper bag and then into the garbage.

Who remembers those God-awful elastic belts with the metal snaps that dug into your ....well, you get the picture.

I was 14, while in the bathroom at home  I got my period and panicked. I called my mother and she told me it was so I could have a baby one day. The next day when I came home from school, she handed me a book.

In 5th grade my public school friends were segregated girls in one room, boys in the other.  They told me about the movie they saw.

I went to Catholic school.  Nothing like that ever happened there.

Far as knowing about the birds & bees, I kinda knew but didn't have a clue.  I remember health class about stuff and swore it wouldn't happen to me.. guess what?  I was wrong.

I remember being in 5th grade, and all the girls and their moms had to come to school and watch a movie that discussed it, but of course everyone seemd too embarassed to ask questions, but my mom being a nurse answered all of mine on the way home!

(Does anybody else remember shirt cardboards?  My dad traveled, and sent his shirts to the laundry, and they came back neatly folded around a piece of cardboard, which made them easy to pack.  Those cardboards were my art and craft paper.)
