.....after reading these responses, I feel very fortunate that I the mother I had. I just cannot comprehend any mother letting her children just pick it up this information (or misinformation) out on the playground or the streets or not all.

@chrystaltree, my Mother only talked to me about periods & nothing more. That was the way it was in our house. I can't say the reasons because I don't even know. Even with both our parents deceased, my sister and I still don't know much about our families.. Things weren't talked about & for you having the mom you did, that's fantastic!!!

I'm 56, so I grew up when things were not so open. My mom was always ahead of her time but having three girls, I suspect she wanted to do better by us than her mother did by her.

I'm actually GLAD my maternal unit didn't tell me ~ Lord only knows what she would've said.
I'm the total opposite of her, thank goodness, I've never been inhibited to talk about such matters with my kids.
Quite frankly I always found her attitude disgusting and very weird.

@chrystaltree, I am 68 and things weren't open hardly at all to my sister and I. It was just us two and our mom was the oldest of 7 so she was very strict on us. I look back and wish I'd of had the courage to ask questions but it was what it was.

In the 6th grade.
My best friend & I went to the library & found a book about human reproduction w/pictures in the Health section. We both
My first period arrived on my 17th birthday. I think the shock at the library delayed it.
The next day my mother gave me "the book." To this day, I am still waiting for my 92 yr old mother to talk to me about the birds & the bees.

I guess we knew about it, the birds and bees part. I lived with my gf and parents after my Mom died, and when we would be doing homework at night, we somtimes got really crazy, so we were talking and laughing, and finally one of us asked, "well, how does he get it in?" Her Mom could hardly get it out of her mouth,; she turned every shade of red. and she said "Well girls, it gets hard.". We laughed til we cried, about fourteen years old I guess.Just will never forget that.

My mom had the talk to me about cycles early enough, so no problem on that.
The neighbor girl and I were out playing one day in the summer when we were about in 4th or 5th grade. She was one year older than me. She told me she was going to tell me a secret on how babies were made, but we had to hide in the bushes in the ally for her to tell me. This was going to be HUGE. LOL Anyway, I could hardly believe it. We decided her parents did it 6 times because there were 6 kids and thank goodness mine only did it twice because there were only 2 of us. LOL LOL Really funny. I never got that talk from my mom ever. So at least the neighbor girl told me.
