@stevieb wrote:Oh my yes, the ad and marketing folks have managed to convince corporate America and the world that they're integral to product success. In an age when there's so much junk being peddled perhaps they are. Still, there was a time when products spoke for themselves. They were either desirable or they weren't, and would sink or swim accordingly. If M&M sales are down, this doesn't strike me as a brilliant plan to move the goods. Nope, this is just more agenda driven nonsense. You want to sell sweets, you don't change the shoes on animated pieces of candy.
ITA, but those days are long gone.
Frankly, I really don't pay much attention to any candy company's ads .... but then it occurred to me that perhaps I'm not their target market. Maybe their targeted age bracket is ages 8 to 18? I have no idea.

I wonder if this will affect sales, either positively or negatively.

@Oznell I sincerely hope you're right and that the mainstream, and yes, there still is one, is waking up to the nonsense, growing tired of being 'educated' by the media and by Madison Avenue and will react accordingly. It would also be wonderful if corporations woke up and realized that in most instances they're being bilked by ad agencies pushing messages that don't resonate with large groups of shoppers and are otherwise creating ads that fall flat.

It's not easy being green. Kermit never would have imagined this nonsense. With all the problems facing this world, a candy company's decision to announce their wokeness is just plain ridiculous.

This marketing isn't aimed at us. It's aimed at young people who have years and years of brand loyalty and money to give. The younger generation is woke. I'm talking 10 year olds. This is when lifetime brand loyalty starts.
They've moved on from caring what we think- for this candy anyway.

I think we might have a problem if we are identifying with candies.
p.s. I did not read anyone's response until after I posted mine. Relieved to see that I was not an outlier with my rattled sense of what is and what isn't worthy of fretting over. Hurray for all of us!

Geez louise. I looked up ridiculous in the dictionary and found this mess.
