I think we are too hard on ourselves, I always thought I took crappy photos, even my high school graduation photo was a disappointment.. Fast forward 45 years, I'm at at class reunion and one of the guys I graduated with mentioned that his son saw my picture in the year book and thought I was one of hottest looking girls he had ever seen. My classmate was sweet enough to tell me he thought I was still hot looking. I guess beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.

I take awful pictures...I avoid a camera. Lately, I have been checking myself out in department store mirrors...Lordy, those lights are brutal...sometimes I grab a look and say who is that woman??  I look much better in that lying bathroom mirror.  My daughter says Ma you look good to me and everyone says you look great. Sometimes I believe we are so critical of ourselves and our minds eye sees our faces differently.

I know one thing, the salon where I get my hair done has absolutely horrible lighting and everyone looks awful...even the young chicks. omgosh I cannot look at myself the whole time she's coloring/trimming, etc. until the end. Ugghhhh it’s brutal.

Re: What you look like

[ Edited ]

Oh ladies!  I relate to each and every one of you!  I hate my own voice and cannot look at photos of myself, they are so hideous.

One thing I did figure out though, is that I am used to seeing my reflection (backwards) in the mirror.

I have noticed how different everyone looks in the mirror when I've accidentally caught a glimpse, because none of us are perfectly symmetrical.

Hence, why I look so odd to myself when I see a photo, and everyone else looks normal.  Yet in the mirror, how I am used to seeing myself, doesn't look too bad.

QUESTION I Have for you now is:

how do you all feel about hearing yourself talk on a recording?  I HATE THE SOUND OF MY VOICE TOO,😄

Holy cow the sound of my own voice is enough to make me scream!!!! Thanks for identifying on this weird situation. I always thought it was just me.

Thanks for all your interesting, funny and insightful replies. As many of you have said, we are too hard on ourselves. I truly hate all photos of myself and the sound of my own voice recorded, but I don’t hate myself at all and I enjoy my own reflection in the mirror (most of the time LOL).  Carry on beautiful ladies. We are just too complicated! Lol

I never take good pictures... at least I do not think so.....and other than being forced to renew my drivers license picture every 7 years or so, I have not had a picture taken for 20 years or more..  HATE PICTURES TAKEN.

I heard that some people are just not photogenic even if  in person pretty to look at.  That is me.  I am told I am very attractive in person...but pictures  taken that I see, all I see are my faults.

I think you strongly resemble a famous actress of yesteryear - Joan Crawford.

Well --- for one thing I am not the least bit photogenic and it's not just me that feels that way --- others, family and friends have told me that!  They have said, after seeing some pictures of me --- that doesn't look like you!!!  You are so much more attractive than that!

As for looking in the mirror???  OMG.  I always think --- oh, goodness, I HOPE I look better than that!

Photos are definitely a truer image than a mirror.  We can fool ourselves into thinking the mirror is wrong. Can't do that with a photo.

A crazy experiment: No one’s face is symmetrical...one eye smaller, lips uneven, nose crooked, etc. This is exaggerated in photos. Take your photo a few times, print them out and cut them directly in half down the center of your face. Place both right sides together and then both left sides together. Doesn’t even look like you, right?
