I volunteer at our local hospital in the gift shop.

I would love to volunteer at a shelter for homeless and women with children. I would also love to mentor and help kids with reading. When I retire, I will pursue one of these interests....

I'm on my way this morning to sort donated jewelry for eventual sale to raise funds for the Barbara Davis Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

The proceeds go for research on Type I diabetes which is still without a cure.

We have sales throughout the year and the big annual Carousel Ball is being held in October this year in Denver, that is an exciting fund raiser.

I have a soft spot for elderly people. Maybe volunteering at a senior center/or a nursing home. I also am an animal lover, volunteering at a shelter would be nice.

Re: What volunteer work would make you appreciate where you are in today's world?

I had a medical crisis some years back and was in the hospital for a week.  I was carted around daily for various tests and procedures.  Hospital staff are rushed and busy, of course, and push you quickly whether in a wheelchair or gurney.

I'll never forget one elderly woman who was my volunteer escort and wheeled me somewhere.  She was so kind and gentle, chatted with me during our trip and told me to be prepared for each upcoming crack in the floor. ♥  She was such a bright spot.  So, long story short I would like to pay back and volunteer at the hospital.

Re: What volunteer work would make you appreciate where you are in today's world?

Every day when I wake up and have a roof and food I am thankful to God for them because where I come from and what I saw around me I am amazed.  Any donation I make I pray someone will be blessed because how blessed I am to have it to donate.

I get angry at the people who take advantage of charity and don't need it, robbing and taking from the ones who do.  So I'd like to make sure the ones who really need it get what they need and not the cheaters.

I have always wanted to be a baby rocker in a hospital nursery or NICU.  We had a baby born sick who almost didn't make it.  The night he was born, he had to be transported to a specialized NICU at a different hospital.  When I was discharged my DH and I spent the next 3 1/2  weeks visiting him daily. In the beginning we could only sit and look at him - no touching at first.  We noticed that the majority of babies in the NICU never had visitors, only one other besides ours.  When touching and holding were allowed, we wanted to be there to bond.  Babies who could be held and touched should be.  There are many who aren't for an assortment of reasons.  I don't even know if they have those kind of volunteer people anymore but they should, if they don't.  It's probably against some kind of law now. 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

If I couldn't do that, maybe another area in a hospital would work - waiting room, patient escort, receptionist, etc.

I also think about volunteering at the local pet rescue.  I want to hold kittens and puppies, but I don't want to clean up the do-do.

So many worthy activities have been mentioned here.  Thank you for choosing to donate your time to help man and animal kind.

I cook in my church's kitchen to provide community meals for those in need.  I have served as a literacy tutor at my local library.

When I was still working, I had a longtime hairdresser.  It wasn't until several years into it that I found out she spent one day a week volunteering at hospice.  Absolutely priceless to have your hair look nice.  Hope someday I will have such an angel.
