1. Practical: The IBM Selectric typewriter.

During quite a few years in my career, it was necessary for me to chug out many documents and forms. Having grown up on a standard typewriter, then a simple electric model, this IBM Selectric upped by WPM to 95 and allowed me to increase my output greatly.

I owned my own IBM Selectric and did work out of my home on the side for extra money. I was a very fast typist on that machine and I loved it. I was clocked at 120 wpm at one time. I'm sure I was faster once computers came along because that keyboard was even faster than the Selectric.

But I totally agree with you, before computers, the Selectric was a major upgrade to all prior typewriters.

I have no idea what my speed is now on this laptop, but I'd be surprised if it isn't half what it used to be, with my RA fingers, plus the fact that laptop computers, convenient as they are, are not built for typing speed, at least IMO.
