Modern for me are things that came to be during my growing up and adult periods of time, so AC and TV wouldn't be on my list. I'll choose personal computers and cell phones.

The first modern convenience we had as kids was a dishwasher. It sure made our chores much easier as kids. My mother would make dinner every night. Couldn't live without one now. Then a microwave. Use it every day. Then we got a colored tv, first ones in the hood to have one. I could care less about cell phones, mine is ancient but still works.

We live a couple doors down from a house that was built in 1847. I knew it was an older house but I didn't know how old until recently. I have spent a lot of the summer looking at that house and wondering what this land looked like when they built it, what the people were like and how darn hot and tough summers must of been for them so without a doubt I have to say AC. It is something you don't think about when you have it but it is something you can't stop thinking about when you don't especially in NC summers.

What is your favorite modern invention?

All that improve diagnosis of serious disease and the many devices that help people live a full life. Not necessarily a longer life, but a life in which they can still be an active participant. I do not mean this for only humans, but also for our domestic furry family members.

Even though I have been deemed an electronics/gadget geek, TV/DVD and many of the other things mean much less to me that being able to live a full life for however many years. Some things that have allowed me to live a few more years of my active life were not available in times past.

Those are my favorites.

At this time of year, I'd have to say air conditioning! The Internet runs a close second.
