Re: What is wrong with the good ol USA?

It starts at the bottom. We need to start showing our children how to MAKE things again. Show them how to "craft" something worth passing on. It's then we can build a better USA.

Yes, I agree.  My grandfather could build or fix anything, same with  my Dad.  I really wish that I had learned some of that from them, but they just did it, and I was interested in other things.

In the process, they (and our family) were also more self sufficient.

Maybe another way to look at this is that we've become comfortable "outsourcing" things in our every day lives as well.

Interesting thought.

Interesting theory, but as far as clothing goes, I don't think you'd sell this idea to the masses.   Fads come and go and even trends don't last as long as they used to.

@Tinkrbl44,

Oh I was speaking more about things that are handmade in general, clothing is a good example. Learning a trade to know "how to". Do schools even offer any vocational classes anymore? What about home ec?

Re: What is wrong with the good ol USA?

I've said this in a few other threads.....

Read the book "A Call to Arms" regarding how America did a 180 regarding EVERYTHING when WWII started. It's a long and dry read but it shows how we went from just about going down the toilet as a nation on every level to a Super Power.  The very interesting thing is.... many of the issues we are facing NOW were happening THEN.

We need to understand the facts of our past to realize how we arrived are out present. Like I said, not an easy read but it sheds light on the issues regarding social reform, businesses, wages, productivity, overseas trade... SO MUCH.

NOT to take this thread in another direction, or become political, but one thing rarely mentioned is that this country (and the rest of the world) is seriously overpopulated!

I read an ecomist's report years ago that this country could operate at a maximum efficiency & prosperity with a population of no more than 150 million people.   Right now, the U.S. is at about 318 million people.

Just where are all the jobs for these people supposed to come from?

I think one would have to be very trusting of Qvc to believe that the prices they are charging are fair based on what they actually pay the Chinese x the number of units they buy.

A growing trend among Millenials is that they believe in Socialism over Capitalism. Free college, medical treatment, low cost housing, etc. They question the need for capitalism to get ahead.

That said, I think that answers the questions raised by others about posting on FB or Go Fund Me for someone to help them financially.

Me too.  What choice would I have being Native American.

Remember, Susan sells a lot to QVC or contracts items in lots to QVC with her name on the garment.

Lets pay the import tax, the transportation, the warehousing, the taxes on the land the warehouses and Q building are located, all the various employees you never see to bring you your item.  Hmmmm, the hosts are grossly overpaid, the set designers, those providing the funishings for the sets, the models, the lighting equipement rental and those who direct the lighting, the camerperson, those working in the offices, the customer service reps, etc, etc, etc.  Most all must demand benefits of sort.

So the garments will reflect all those who have their hands in the pie so to speak.
