Re: What is the Most Risky Thing You Have Ever Done?

Leaving my family, friends and home to move to a new place 1500 miles away with no job, money or place to live.  Just a 1 way ticket on an airplane literally - landed in the airport, hailed a taxi and asked the driver to take me to the beach. Eventually (1 1/2 years later) I wound up going home because I needed to have a car to make it work.  I was 17 when I carried out this escapade. I did it again when I was 37 and have been here ever since.

Moving from a big city to a smaller town.

I feel homesick sometimes.

I woke at 3 in the morning to see a strange man in my bedroom going through my jewelry box. I jumped up and went after him with a young mother's fury. I have never felt such a surge of adrenaline. As I was chasing him down the dark basement stairs, better sense took over and I retreated upstairs and called the police. I was very lucky he did not harm my children or me. I shook for a week.

Wow...you were adventurous at 17! I was just a shy kid at 17.

[ Edited ]

Walked around the rim of Mt. Vesuvius.  My first husband wanted to do this -- on our honeymoon, at that.  The personnel warned us that there was no way to rescue us if we fell in.  It was his hideous idea to do this; he was a thrill-seeker who also climbed Mt. Everest later.  Thank heavens we had parted by that time.

I wonder if walking the rim is still permitted.  I bet not.

ETA:  I just googled to see a photo of the rim of Mt. Vesuvius, which I have not viewed since 1968.  I see there are guard rails now.  There were none then.  We were very close to the opening as we circled the bloomin' thing.  There is no way to slip into the volcano now unless you break through the barrier fencing.

Yes...living in a small town after living in a large city can be trying at first . You can be more anonymous in a larger city. When I first moved to this small town, it sort of bugged me at first as everyone seemed to know me or kept asking me if I was related to "So&so."

There isn't as much to do in a smaller town, but there are other advantages. People are warmer in small towns. Generally, small towns have less crime. There is less noise, and far less traffic. We had such long commutes in the city, our evenings were almost shot by the time we got home, fixed dinner, and cleaned up the kitchen.

OMG! What an ordeal! I'm not sure how I would have handled the situation. I'm sure your heart was pounding like crazy. That is one of those experiences that would traumatize me for life.

Hitchhiking with a friend, back in the early 70s.  Just call us dumb and dumber.  Nothing bad ever happened to us, we were very lucky.
