Re: What do you hate about the holidays?

I look forward to the holidays and decorating for Christmas.  What I disliked was not enough help at stores and waiting in lines so now I shop online and avoid that.  Cat Wink

I love the holidays. What I hate is the commercialization of Christmas. It should be about family & friends. Not about how many gifts you give & receive. I think the true spirit of the holidays has gotten lost !!

My sister has always carried a lot of baggage and every holiday she brings drama.  This year will be no different in that regard.

Exactly the reason I haven't spoken to my sister in almost 2 years....the stress is gone...

Re: What do you hate about the holidays?

I wouldn’t say I “hate” the holidays, I just don’t like them like I used to.  I could do without them to be honest.  I’m happiest with regular weekdays.

No family drama or anything.  Everyone gets along fine.

I have very little family left so there’s some melancholy associated with the holidays. So that’s part of it.   Longing for what used to be. Passage of time and getting older kind of thing.

And there’s just way too much advance buildup, hoopla, for most of them. All this work and advance preparation and the assumption that we all have grand galas with 50 family members.  Norman Rockwell time.  And if we fall short of that, we feel lesser than.

Look at Thanksgiving. So much food. So much preparation. Meal lasts 20 minutes, tops. And then you have to clean it all up. It’s just too much.

I’d rather have a great grilled cheese sandwich, potato chips and a great dessert. Seriously.  Happy to see family always and they’re welcome to have a grilled cheese with me. But the rest of it is all too much.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

THat there are people alone who would rather spend their time with others but, for whatever reasons, have no one.

We have an open door policy; if you have no place to go, come sit at our table and celebrate.

Re: What do you hate about the holidays?

I love the holidays but I grew to really dislike Christmas dinner with the relatives.  All the classic stuff, a couple of people drank too much, a couple routinely bragged about how much money they had, and a couple were outright bigots.

I went to keep the family together and then I thought, WTH do I care?  NO MORE!  One cousin bragged about manipulating their taxes, I just couldn't stand them anymore.

We spent Thanksgiving with my lifelong friend until it got to be too hard to make the long drive.  Now it's just the three of us and we have such a good time!  AND... we get the food we like Smiley Happy
