I grew up (and still live) in South Carolina. The Coke/peanut combo was very popular with my friends and relatives. I preferred to eat my peanuts with my Coke, not in it...putting them together just didn't appeal to me...but I was definitely in the minority! I didn't like salt on my watermelon, either--something else very popular then and now.
Nobody I ever knew choked on the combo!

I remember doing this back in the 50s. Actually, it was good. Nothing new to me

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest. I've never heard of peanuts in coke. It must be regional. Some people I've noticed put milk in their coke. I never did that either. I just drank plain coke, no frills. I'm a purist. I drink black coffee, black tea with no lemon or sugar, plain water with no lemon, regular milk, no chocolate or strawberry flavorings, AND Margaritas with NO SALT.
