I agree with all the qualities mentioned by the other posters.
What about men with difficult mothers? Sometimes a person is emotionally healthier to break away.

Good-looking, intelligent, honest, integrity, good sense of humor, in shape (would NEVER be with a man who is overweight), good job, animal lover.

he must be honest, have integrity and a sense of humor along with being intelligent. looks help, but i don't like movie star good looks or pretty boy looks. it makes me feel they are shallow even if they aren't. my experience has been they are shallow, though
love kids, animals that whole thing and you're in like flint with me!

Sense of humor, well read, intelligent, clean--squeaky clean, neat, are WAY up there with me. Of course all the obvious ones. . . !

@tansy...Yes, it is not always true that the way a man treats his mother is the way he will treat his wife...Tread very carefully with this saying...What one may see may not be what it appears, so my advice would be to make sure that one is very familiar with the family dynamics of their spouses-to-be before committing to a marriage and don't ignore the "red flags".

My husband passed away last year...we were together for 30 years and had been high school sweethearts with a 20 year gap in between...I have often wondered why we stuck together since we had many rocky times...he was brought up very differently from me...I think I kind of "get it" now...because what I miss most of all is knowing, no matter what, he had my back...he thought I was the most wonderful human being that walked the earth...and, despite our fights and our differences over the years (and there were many!), I knew that he would be there for me until the end of time! I think I took it for granted until I no longer had it...and that is what I miss more than anything...
That ... and he made me laugh longer and louder than anyone ever has...I often told him that his ability to make me laugh saved his life many times!!!

@Sunnyfield, thank you for your post, it is what I most miss about not having my husband anymore, the security that comes with knowing that someone has your back. What a comforting feeling that was . . .

That is why I say it is important for a man to like his mother. His relationship to his mother carries over to his feelings about women in general. Everyone's opinion here relates back to what they perceive, know or are living through. I can only speak from my experiences.
