Meier & Frank in Oregon. They were bought out by Macy's.
We used to love to go to the Meier and Frank warehouse sale in Portland. Great deals on all kinds of stuff.

Also, I would give anything to have baked goods from Waldorf Bakery again!!
Do you remember the Jenkins Arcade across the street from Hornes? It was jammed with unique small stores. I had my wedding veil custom made in one of those stores on one of the upper levels. Bit of trivia - the Jenkins Arcade was the first indoor mall in the USA.
I remember all those wonderful bakeries in Squirrel Hill. I'm sure I'm spelling it wrong but we used to get a pastry called a kickel. It was similar to an elephant ear and fabulous.

Bullock's was my favorite store until the 1994 earthquake just about demolished it. Broadway, May Company, Mervyn's, Sak's Fifth Avenue...all in Southern California.

Did anyone have a Grant's?
Yes, there was a Grant's where I lived. I worked there for one Christmas season.
Is this the same as WT Grant? This was the first 5&10 we had with a luncheonette.
My very first job (besides babysitting) was working as a waitress in "The Skillet" in W.T. Grant's. Our boss was a real lech. If you've ever seen the movie Napoleon Dynamite, our boss looked like Napoleon's brother. We wore ugly brown polyester uniforms with aprons.

I miss Rich's, an Atlanta institution that Macy's absorbed and ruined. Both stores were usually at the bigger malls, and once Federated bought Rich's, the clock was ticking. Things went on as usual for awhile, and then it was all about eliminating redundant workers and such. When they went down to one store at the mall, it was Macy's.
Rich's had a truly distinct flavor. You had big fashion shows, personal shoppers, the Pink Pig ride for kids, and the annual lighting of the Christmas Tree. Now whatever is left goes to Lenox Square, and it's all boring as the dickens. They also ruined the fabulous merchandise mix that Rich's was known for.
Phooey on Macy's!

In northern NJ, Bamberger' s. My grandmother would take me shopping for school clothes there, and then we always had a hamburger and Apple pie for lunch in their restaurant.
Epstein' s was another dept. Store I remember in NJ.
When I got older (17), my friends and i would drive to Rockaway Mall. One of our favorite stores was Hahne' s.
