Re: What Now-Defunct Local Stores Do You Miss?

I haven't read all the posts so someone may have mentioned this store. It wasn't a local store, but a chain headquartered in Canada called Northern Reflections. I loved the casual clothes at that place. I think it went belly up in the late 90's. I don't have any idea how much of the U.S. they covered with their stores. I lived in the Northeast at that time. And I have fond memories of Woolworth's, Kresge's and W.T. Grant way back when I was growing up. Another dept. store chain I loved was Kaufmann's headquartered in Pittsburgh. They were bought up by Macy's, a store I don't care for.

Jones Store bought by Macys - Stix Baer & Fuller may have been bought by Dillards. I can't remember. I truly enjoyed shopping in these stores. Benjamin Franklin and Woolworths hold great memories, but I wouldn't shop a lot in there today. But I loved sitting at the Woolworth's counter with my mom eating patty melts and malts! {#emotions_dlg.thumbup}

Bradlees, Caldors, Two Guys (in Jersey). Now, BBB is located in the same spot as Bradlees, and Target took over Caldors location.

Too many to mention, but for starters Woodward and Lothrop (Woodies), Hecht's, Garfinkels, Raleigh's, Camalier and Buckley, Georgetown Leather, Britches of Georgetown, Kanns, Landsburgs, and quite a few more. They all were fixtures in the Washington DC area once upon a time... None of them remain. It stinks. If we could get just one of them back, I'd have to go with Woodies. I loved that store. Garfinkels was a great store with professional sales staff that were consistent and stayed for years, so you got to know them and they got to know you, and they truly knew their stuff... They also had a fabulous salon at the store I used to frequent. Camalier and Buckley was a nicer gift shop and had fantastic small leather goods, including bags. That was the first place I ever saw Ghurka bags. Georgetown Leather was the first place I ever saw a Dooney bag... Shopping used to be a lot more fun!

Memco, Bradlees's and Caldor were good stores. I miss them too. Along those lines, I also miss the old 'dime' stores like Woolworth and Woolco, GC Murphy's, Greene's and Kressge's. I also miss the old Ben Franklin variety stores and Grants... Wacamaw Pottery Factory was fun too, even though I never got the name because they sold everything,... Sheesh, and now about all we have is Walmart and Target and they just aren't the same!

For all you Pittsburghers, I miss Kauffman's, Gimbels, and Hornes!! Shopping in downtown used to be such a fun day when I was growing up.

Also, I would give anything to have baked goods from Waldorf Bakery again!!
