Re: What Now-Defunct Local Stores Do You Miss?

I don't know recognize any of the stores the OP posted about.

I recall Grants as a kid..Stores I missed are Caldors and Montgomery Ward. When we were first married we got everything at Wards..appliances, furniture, kids clothes lol!

I liked Caldor's home section.

I went to a neighboring town for an appt and they have Kmart. Gosh I miss Kmart..just the browsing and stuff..really funny though to see Kenmore Washing Machine sitting in the isle.

I think our local Sear's is a junk store..Kmart seemed better quality. I told Hubby they should change our local Sear's (that is doing poorly) into a Kmart..keep the automotive, appliances and TV section.. I swear the quality of Kmart clothing was even better. I actually was looking at baby stuff..and it was fine I thought. I went in looking for a specific block toy for my grandson and spent two hours browsing LOL..

Oh, yes, forgot Montgomery Wards, really miss them. Also miss Value City, the department store, really had some deals, I miss the fun of seeing what you could find and wanted to purchase.

I loved shopping at Caldor. I used to work next door to one when I was a teen and I would get paid and spend most of my paycheck there. I also loved Service Merchandise.

Fortunoff's - I loved that place, especially at Christmas time. They had a wonderful selection of home decor; also jewelry, watches, etc. They have a Backyard Store, but I don't bother to go in there. The place literally sparkled and everything was so nicely displayed -- made you want to buy up everything in the store.
