Re: What Now-Defunct Local Stores Do You Miss?

I remember Grant's, we used to go there with my dear departed mother, she loved the store. We also had a store called Britt's, a JJ Newberry spin off, it was a really nice department store.

Burdines - Our local Macy's now resides in the "Burdines" building but never remade the store to actually look like a Macy's. I'm not much a fan of Macy stores.
Hills Dept. - Nice toy department and really good customer service.
Eckerds - Really, really miss this store. Not much a fan of CVS.

I would sell my soul for the Blum's fudge cake recipe. The Madonna Inn in Santa Maria CA makes a cake similar to the coffee crunch cake.

I miss I Magnins.

Rickels and Pergament....both Home Depot type stores.

Did anyone have a Grant's?

Yes, there was a Grant's where I lived. I worked there for one Christmas season.

Is this the same as WT Grant? This was the first 5&10 we had with a luncheonette.

Yes, same one. I worked there when I was in H.S. in No Calif.

Re: What Now-Defunct Local Stores Do You Miss?

Mine would be totally local stores that were in my area and a bakery that had shops in my area and Cleveland.

We had a locally owned hardware store that wasn't anything to look at, nothing fancy inside, but they carried items the big box places didn't carry and every single employee who worked in the store could help you and they were always correct. They knew what they were talking about. The guy who owned it was ready to retire and that was the end of the store.

Then we had a women's clothing store that was in our downtown area and they had another in our local mall. The one inside the mall had a bridal area and that is where I got my wedding dress. I absolutely loved this local store and shopped their often. I still miss that store.

I miss Rich's Department store in Atlanta. Once it changed to Macy's, it was never the same.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

Wow...I do remember my Mom taking me to Grants and to Woolworths. And to Lit Brothers Department Store in Willow Grove PA.

I also miss Bradlees and Caldor. Before the "Open on Thanksgiving day shopping" or "open at Midnight on Black Friday" that most stores do now, Bradlees and Caldor were the "early" Black Friday shopping places in my area...they opened at 6AM, long before the malls would open at 8am!{#emotions_dlg.laugh}
