Re: What Are You Reading --- September 2014

For fans of author TANA FRENCH, I am reading THE SECRET PLACE. I am about 200 pages in on a 450+ page book and am really enjoying it ... Storyline from Goodreads follows:

LM

The photo on the card shows a boy who was found murdered, a year ago, on the grounds of a girls’ boarding school in the leafy suburbs of Dublin. The caption says, I KNOW WHO KILLED HIM. Detective Stephen Moran has been waiting for his chance to get a foot in the door of Dublin’s Murder Squad—and one morning, sixteen-year-old Holly Mackey brings him this photo. The Secret Place, a board where the girls at St. Kilda’s School can pin up their secrets anonymously, is normally a mishmash of gossip and covert cruelty, but today someone has used it to reignite the stalled investigation into the murder of handsome, popular Chris Harper. Stephen joins forces with the abrasive Detective Antoinette Conway to find out who and why. But everything they discover leads them back to Holly’s close-knit group of friends and their fierce enemies, a rival clique—and to the tangled web of relationships that bound all the girls to Chris Harper. Every step in their direction turns up the pressure. Antoinette Conway is already suspicious of Stephen’s links to the Mackey family. St. Kilda’s will go a long way to keep murder outside their walls. Holly’s father, Detective Frank Mackey, is circling, ready to pounce if any of the new evidence points toward his daughter. And the private underworld of teenage girls can be more mysterious and more dangerous than either of the detectives imagined. The Secret Place is a powerful, haunting exploration of friendship and loyalty, and a gripping addition to the Dublin Murder Squad series.

I love Tana French! I just bought her new book and will be starting it tonight.

(She is one author I whose books I always buy in hardback--I don't want to wait!)

INSOMNIAC, I am enjoying this one. I spent the whole day, lazing around reading. I have a ton of stuff to do outside but it was raining this morning so I gave it up to a good book. Love days like this!

Three Wishes by Liane Moriarty. I read The Husband's Secret by the same author earlier this summer and really enjoyed it, so I am exploring more of her works.

I am reading CRITICAL CONDITIONS by Stephen White. This book is about sixteen years old. I have read one of his books before and enjoyed it. So far this book is good but I am slow going on it. Have an eye condition that makes it painful to read at times and also have been busy.

icaughtu, do you ever listen to audio books? That is a great way to enjoy books, too.

Speaking of Audiobooks: I have been listening to Stephen King's Heart of Atlantis on CD in my car. I think it is 20+ cd's. I wish I could go on a long road trip as I am enjoying it so much. It is read by William Hurt, who while not my favorite actor, is doing a wonderful job with this story.

Just started The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters last night. Cover promises "several sleepless nights" which I'm not sure is what I really want in a book I read at bedtime, but the setting: an old Georgian manor house in England post WWII is right up my alley. Also called "a ghost story that creeps up your spine".
