Re: Were There Neighbors Growing Up.......................

There was a very nice older couple that lived next door, the woman's name was Mabel, and she had a tabby cat named Tom, and my sister and I would knock on her door and ask if Tom could come out and play......😸 When she baked cookies she also gave us some.....

Re: Were There Neighbors Growing Up.......................

I grew up with very nosy neighbors. My aunt and uncle lived across the street, and would “tell” on the 3 of us all of the time. My mother tried her best to keep us in the backyard or even in the house to avoid the “did you know what so and so was doing?” phone calls. I grew up paranoid and scared!

@CrazyKittyLvr2   In its infancy, the Little League World Series was played at Carl Stokes field which was along the Susquehanna River in the town of Newberry, PA.   Lamade Field where they play now, where the LL Museum is,  is on the other side of Williamsport, PA.

I grew up about 15 minutes from the Newberry field.

@CrazyKittyLvr2  Yes. Not only in the neighborhood where I spent the majority of my life growing up, but also the neighborhood where we purchased a Historic Home and spent years bringing it back to life- our oldest two remember it well (and the people) but our youngest two were babies/toddlers.We also had/have my in-laws community which we all love.

Thinking about this, all these communities were/are older and had different age groups living there. Once we left the "Big House" (what our boys call it), we wound up in newer communities (20 years old vs 60 plus) filled with all single or young parents. Very different vibe. Where we are now is about 25 years in age but the turn-over is every 2-4 years; very few live here "forever" as my youngest says. There is lots for little kids to do and for parents with little kids but once in high-school....nothing. Other than bars or heading an hour plus into the city, it's pretty quiet. Yes, we have Disney and Lego Land, etc but once we've been there, we're done going there. Nature events, however, (exploring the state by kayak, snorkeling, bikes, etc) are amazing and endless.

I wonder if it would be different if there was the age diversity here like we had before; I really don't know. But the memories are all fond ones and I'm glad my children were able to experience them as well. Smiley Happy

@millieshops   I had relatives that lived in Cogan Station and I think we may have gone through Newberry on the way there.

It was so long ago, and whileI have a good memory, the exact route escapes me.

Yes, an elderly couple living down the road. Their names were Arnie and Erna. I loved going to their house at Christmas because they had those "bubble lights" on their tree.

Re: Were There Neighbors Growing Up.......................

There was a sweet older couple that lived down the street; she was very well known in the community, quite a philanthropist, he was a judge of some sorts.  She was friends with my grandmother. They never had children, but had this great big black dog, a Newfoundland, and an assortment of kitties.    My mother used to tell me that they would watch me at the bus stop from their breakfast window every morning just to see what I had on...my mother dressed us very fastidiously, not a hair out of place...of course little did they know what I endured to look that way.  But that's a story for another time.🤪. He passed away when I was probably 10 or so....she lived a long time after that; we moved so I don't know when she passed.  She was very kind, unfortunately I haven't known neighbors like that since I was a kid.  Our neighbors are decent, but people just don't socialize like they did when I was growing up.
