My husband and I were having lunch at an upscale eatery one day last summer and a man and woman came in. I kid you not -- she was wearing long pants in a gold shimmery material and a BRA. It was not a top, it was a BRA. LOL. And, yes, people stared.

@Citrine1Most eating establishments, especially upscale ones, reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. I would think that a half dressed person would be asked to leave.

Re: Well. I Have Seen it All

I am not willing to excuse every person who goes out in public with poor hygiene and dressed in pjs or dirty clothes because they might have mental illness. I have a dear nephew who has suffered with mental illness for years...he still brushes his hair and puts on clothes when he is out of the house. He always looks presentable.

So true that being polite will always get more of what you may need from others than being rude or demanding.

Read my post and you should see the point I was making; If you don't choose to believe my post is true, that's your choice.

Re: Well. I Have Seen it All

I used to see women in rollers all the time when they were out shopping, but I never thought to wonder if they had a big date! Interesting they would even think about that.

@Calcgirl   Maybe a Safeway thing? Today, a friend and I went to one of our local stores to shop and there she was, an all grown up, middle aged woman, well groomed, made up and wearing, you guessed it, a pair of Christmas pajamas... I just don't get it... It just looked so silly... Perhaps it was my imagination, but both of us thought she looked at least a tad self conscious... Personally, I was never a follower of trends that made me uncomfortable... Why would I?

I went to Safeway today and I saw a lady with two kids, all of them dressed in pajamas. She also had big fuzzy slippers and a old robe on. By the looks of her hair and the kids hair, it was apparent they just got out of bed although it was later in the afternoon. Not sure if they were sick or what, but I stayed a distance away from them just in case.  This is a nice area, so I doubt she was dressed this way because she could not afford clothes.

Totally class-less.  Must be watching way too much QVC and literally taking the hosts and on-air presenters advice saying its totally okay to roll out of bed to do errands in your bed clothes.  Maybe she's not from your area and just landed at that particular grocery store. I can't imagine someone thinking so little of themselves.  Poor roll model for the kids.

I didn't think she was either. I thought she was making a comment about wearing pj's in public. Since that's what the Q's been hawking lately.

I, personally, do not care for this casual attitude.

"very elegant Thanksgiving Inn"

If not snobby or condescending then what?

I reread the OP several times and I don’t believe she had a condescending or snobby attitude at all. I think the reference to a “nice area” by @Calcgirl and “an elegant Thanksgiving Inn” by @amyb was an attempt to rule out other more understandable reasons for going out in public this way.

Presumably someone who was homeless wouldn’t be dining in an expensive Inn. I read the comment to mean that the gentleman didn’t have the excuse that someone in dire straits might have.

I grew up poor, have never forgotten my roots  and am very sensitive to class snobbery but I absolutely don’t believe these posters were intending any such thing.

Wow. Just wow.

@Harpa You misunderstood my intent entirely...I'm in agreement with @Calcgirl  and you on this. I was saying how (frankly I was surprised that day I got clobbered for saying so) it's been tricky to express that on these boards. But...lol...what ISN'T tricky or "triggering" to someone in each post!

So...to be clear....agree...pjs aren't for the grocery store or breakfast at a hotel...they are for lounging and sleeping at home. But everything goes apparently now...it's all sloppy imo.

The only trigger is the judgment passed by OP and a few others. It's called being a decent person and not judging. You haven't walked in someone else's shoes.

I've seen a lot worse worn by people in stores, including in highfalutin areas.
