With all the heat I've been expecting thunderstorms. Last night about 10:30/11:00 I heard rumbling and the sky lit up and thought here we go. We always called it heat lighting. It was like a huge flashbulb went off behind the clouds.
It did that for almost 2 hrs. It rained for all of maybe 20 minutes, and not a downpour either.
I couldn't believe how long it lasted. DD mentioned this am too.
Just thunder and a light show, and it is still hot and sticky this am.

Oh yes, heat lightening. I haven't experienced it in a while. We sometimes just have it without the thunder.

Thunderstorms are rare where I live in CA. But I remember when I lived in Texas the thunderstorms and heat lightning. Strangely enough, I miss them both. Not that I want to live through them again, though.

Hot and sticky here in NY today. We are expecting thunderstorms for next couple of days Did all of my cleaning and running errands by noon. Too hot to do anything more. Staying in with air conditioner for the rest of the day. Had enough. LOL

It is so hot here in Central NJ that it actually takes your breath away.

Have I missed anything about the Miss Petunia antics ? You wrote posts so well that I felt like I was there beside you !

We had a heat wave over a week ago and now it has been raining and sometimes thunderstorms for 5 days. We will probably send it East when we are finished with it. This is for Chicagoland. I can never understand when you people talk about their weather but never mention the area they live in.

@jlkz lol. No I haven't done a pic or Petunia tale in a long time.
She has gotten big, still very chatty (she makes her wants known), hellion one minute and in your lap all lovey dovey the next. Still terrorizing poor old Tess.
I will try to get a new pic of her and post it on the Pet forum.
Thanks for asking about the little loveable beast.

You must live near me and for the sake of anonimity, I won't say but we had the same thing happen by us and your description was exact. I thought of it as an "electrical storm". It usually never happens like that. Yes, it's awful here like that too, this morning. ilk. ILK. means yuk. LOL XO

According to the National Weather Service. So called heat lighting is simply a storm in the distance. Light travels the longest. The sound of thunder is only a 10 mile distance. Has nothing to do with heat, other than the heart in that distant storm.
Our break in the weather should come today. Storms to begin with, then rain (some of it heavy) following. We'll probably have more of these days of intense heat. Storms breaking the heat. Just a cycle of summer and very gradual warmer summers.
Strangest storm I ever went through was the time we had that Derecho. Went through W. Virginia, VA & Maryland. Those were lines of straight wind storms. The thunder was strange. Sharp bangs instead of rumble. Very strange. That was in 2012. What a Derechoe looked like
