Reminds me of a neighbor who had her hair "done" weekly and then wrapped it in toilet paper before going to bed.

Her husband must have loved that.  Ugh.

@Tinkrbl44

This is exactly what my mother did.  But not so strange, considering that many girls my age were going to bed with their hair wrapped in juice cans around that same time!  #60s hair ha ha.

OMG ..... ORANGE JUICE CANS!

I recall that .... and it later evolved into ironing my hair.

I "perfected" it by scooping sections of hair straight up, rolling it around the can, and then using bobby pins to anchor the can.  I would do a whole row on the top of my head.  It looked like an orange juice can Mohawk!

Then it later creeped my mother out to see me ironing my hair on her ironing board, but since I had just washed my hair, I saw nothing wrong.   LOL

I haven't read all of the posts......

Anyone remember the Bubble hairstyle?

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

I ironed my hair too, but alsoo remember my sister using orange juice cans, with big globs of Dippity Do on each section!

I had to google it to get a picture and it's just like I remember - even mentions of the smell brings back memories. My Dad had a "super smeller" nose and would yell up to us in our bedroom  upstairs (with the door closed) when we used nail polish/polish remover "Hey, what're you doing up there, what's that terrible smell, pee-ew!" and we'd laugh and answer nail polish.

It was the same with Dippity Do, but we'd say "It's Dippity Do so we can have nice hair and get rich husbands so you can get rid of us" and he'd laugh and say carry on! Woman Very Happy

@ROMARY Guilty!  Remember it, and had it.   Also had "the artichoke"!

I used jumbo curlers that were as big as juice cans and dippity-do for the shoulder length flip, like Marlo Thomas in That Girl.  When I was a kid, I would often see women with curlers in their hair at the grocery store with a hairnet or scarf over the curlers.

My Mother had a standing Saturday appointment. She did laundry and went in at 9:00 A.M. She had a French Roll for a number of years. I remember she had a blonde streak sometimes added for effect that was just tucked in.  A rat tail comb was the key and alot of hair spray. It lasted a week. She literally learned to sleep on her face to not mess up the do. Her hairdresser came to her funeral.

Then there were the wind and rain bonnets and complaints about the windows rolled down. Not me..Wash and go most of the time.

@shoesnbags : I had very curly hair  that looked like a bad perm. I tried the juice cans to straighten my hair. Later saved money to purchase the boxed hair relaxer.

@Tinkrbl44 : I ironed my hair whenever my mom was out doing whatever. She told me not to do it.

Re: Weekly Hairdo

@VanSleepy

If you Google old wives tales or myths about periods, you can read a list of them.   I grew up hearing the one about not bathing from my grandmother and her sisters, all born just after 1900.  My mother did not believe in that one.

The only one my mother believed in and supported her entire life was that she did not/would not can pickles when on her period.  Mom believed the chemical changes in the body during a period have an affect on the pickles and pickling process.  Apparently someone she knew lost a full batch of pickles that got blamed on processing while on their period.

P.S.  Just remembered that Mom would not pick beans, cucumbers, tomatoes or peppers from the garden either.  She would cut lettuce, gather corn or cut a head of cabbage, but no touching of anything growing on a plant or vine.

It brought back some memories of a dear friend to me as well.    He would often say if he died and was to be buried on a Friday, his wife would not attend.    He said she had a standing appointment at the beauty shop and he would be buried without her in attendance!
