As I typed before my son got engaged. Now I hear there will be an engagement party "in the beginning of this summer" hosted by the brides family. OK I sound like a wallflower, or like I've been living under a rock (lol), but we never had these in my day, and my daughter didn't have this when she got married. So I would appreciate some help from you ladies who dealt with this.

Questions are; Do we buy gifts for an engagement party? AND do I contribute? I offered about food help and was told not to worry for now, it will be discussed as the planning gets closer. Or do the brides parents handle this? I don't want to do anything wrong!

And lastly- What is the appropriate dress?

My one friend said no gifts its just to announce the engagement officially. I never wear dresses, I am self conscious of my weight ( I carry 15 to 20 extra pounds) since not being able to exercise w my back issues. I also must wear flats. I do have casual nice flats. But I am going to try to lose the lbs because I want to look nice.

(Maybe I should start doing searches on wedding and party info too? Because Im a down to earth blue jeans kind of casual lady and well I'm lost with this stuff..lol. Of course I know for the wedding I buy a gorgeous mother of the groom dress).

To complicate things more, I am not married to my childrens dad. I am remarried to someone else as is he. (And I really dont speak to them unless we have something important)

Well the wedding isn't until 2 years. So for now I just need info with an engagement party. Sorry to ramble but I am a little nervous. I don't want to be one of those mother in laws that drives people crazy! lol.
